What Is A Pellet Grill

A pellet grill runs a bit differently than your traditional gas, charcoal or propane grills. Our Silverbac wood pellet grill and Grilla smoker grill use pellets made of compacted wood for fuel which are fed to a firepot by an auger. An ignitor rod starts the flame and a fan pushes the smoke upwards to spread heat and smoke. A digital control allows you to control the temperature. These components require electricity, so youll need an outlet to run your smoker grill. Learn more about pellet grills.

Grilla Grills Silverbac At Vs Weber Smokefire Ex4

Now, Ive chosen to pick the Grilla Grills Silverbac AT for this comparison as it comes in at the same price point as the Weber SmokeFire EX4 at $999. Though as you can see in my summary article on the Grilla Grills pellet grill range, the Silverbac is available with a standard cabinet for $750, or as a built-in unit for the Grilla Grills outdoor kitchen setup. The Weber SmokeFire EX4 is currently one of two pellet grills that Weber produce, there is also a larger EX6. As the SmokeFire EX4 is commonly found for $999, thats the grill well use for this comparison.

Ive also previously written a summary article on the Weber SmokeFire range. Since I wrote that article, Weber is now selling Gen 2 versions of SmokeFire pellet grills that do appear to have addressed issues with the hopper and firmware/software. However, I do still believe that Weber needs to look again at their design of the grease collector to avoid potential issues and Ill discuss this more below.

    Who Is Grilla Grills

Grilla is a renowned and market-leading company famous for manufacturing wood pellets and charcoal grills. There exists a story behind the inception of this brand.

Almost one and a half decades ago, two friends, namely David Shidler and Mark Graham, came up with a unique idea of launching a range of pellet grills as a side business to a wood furnace company, Fahrenheit Technologies Inc.

In 2012, David Shidler and Mark Graham, being the owner and head engineer respectively, established a company named Grilla in the USA. With the help of self-motivated workers, these two friends launched their first Grilla model in 2012.

In the beginning, Grilla products were quite expensive, mainly for less wealthy people. In order to maintain the quality and make the products available at low prices, the company got shifted to China by the mutual consent of Shidler and Graham.

The brand then decided to cut off the dealership network and sell the products through e-commerce. The company also made a wise decision to expand the business by introducing the audience to a wide range of pellet grills and ceramic Kamado grills. The business grew into a trusted and market-competitive company in a very short period of time.

Silverbac All-Terrain Alpha Connect Quick Overview | Grilla Grills Best New WiFi Pellet Smoker 2021

A favorite among purists The Grand Slam from Blazn’ Grill Works is a heavy duty pellet cooker. Designed to be more smoker than grill you get a basic, but well built cooker for around $1,350. It is available in multiple colors, but you pay more for anything other than the standard red and black. Personally, I wouldn’t pay more for a paint job, but at least there is an option. The controller is a basic PID unit. You don’t get WiFi or a lot of extras, but if you want to do serious smoking over pellets, this is a grill worth looking at.

Comparing Zgrills To Grilla Grills How Do They Differ

So on the face of it the ZGrills 700 series and the Grilla Grills Silverbac definitely look very similar. The style and design of the cooking barrel and the cabinet appear almost identical. Furthermore, the angular design of the chimney stack and the flared sides of the pellet hopper all appear to be the same. However, if you look carefully at the two images above you start to notice a few differences.

First, they are using a different control panel, this is a big difference which Ill get to later. Secondly, you should be able to notice a difference in the appearance of the lid. While they are both stainless steel, they are not built to the same quality. On the subject of stainless steel, compare the internals of the ZGrill and Grilla Grill, you should notice the internals of the Grilla Grill definitely look a bit shinner .

When I started to write this post I actually came across a video made by Mark Graham who is the Engineering Sales Manager at Grilla Grills. The comparison people are making between the ZGrills 700 and Grilla Grills Silverbac is obviously a question they have been getting quite a bit.

A full comparison on features and build quality between the ZGrill 700 series and the Grilla Grills Silverbac pellet grill: Video GrillaGrills.com

As stated above, the Grilla Grill is several hundred dollars more than the ZGrill. So you have to weigh up your budget and the differences between these two grills to make the right decision for you.

Final Thoughts On The Traeger Pro 575 Vs Grilla Grills Silverbac

In terms of the core fundamentals of what most people are looking for in a pellet grill, the Grilla Grills Silverbac is superior to the Traeger Pro 575 in almost every feature. The Silverbac has a larger cooking area, larger pellet hopper, stainless steel lid and stainless steel internal components.

The only component where there can really be any debate between the two on which is better is the Traeger App. With both pellet grills featuring a PID/WiFi controller for precise temperature control, the Traeger Pro 575 and Grilla Grills Silverbac are very closely matched. WiFi monitoring and control can come in very handy when doing low and slow cooks over many hours.

How To Clean Your Grilla Grill

Grilla Grills Silverbac Review: High Quality, High Value

Cleaning your grill unit is necessary for its long lifespan. People think that cleaning a grill is more difficult than solving a Rubiks cube. The following steps will change the mindset of those people.

Make sure you have all the required tools, including heavy-duty scrubbies, cleaning solution, fresh aluminum foils, shop vacuum cleaner, wire brush, garbage bag, and paper towels. The cleaning liquid should be safe for stainless steel and tough on grease.

  • Start cleaning the grill by rubbing the wire brush against the grates. By doing so, the loose dirt will drop off.
  • Remove all the detachable components like grill grates and heat deflector.
  • Vacuum all the solid dirt or ash present in the chamber and firepot.
  • Remove the old and dirty foil papers wrapped on the drip tray. Clean it with a towel and wrap it again with a couple of new foil papers. Make sure the edges are completely wrapped.
  • Squirt the cleaning solution on both sides of the lids of chamber and hopper. Leave it on for two minutes. Then, rub the scrubbies against the surface of the lids until they appear shiny. Squirt more solution if the grease does not come off easily.
  • Do the same with the deflector and grill grates. You can thoroughly wash these two items with water too.
  • At this stage, the cleaning procedure ends. Now, re-install the deflector, grates, and drip pan.

    Is Weber Made In China

Weber settled the case out of court, but they made no effort to change their practices. In fact, most of the company manufactures most of their products in China these days. Up until 2016, Weber could still claim that their grills were Made in The USA with globally sourced components, but thats no longer the case.

Arent Traeger Grills Made In The Usa

Traeger, the longest and most established pellet grill brand were originally manufactured in Oregon and were produced in the USA up until 2006 when the Traeger family sold the company. In 2006 the patent that Traeger had on the design of pellet grills/smokers since 1986 ran out, then more makes/brands of pellet grills started to enter the market. Traeger felt they had to move manufacturing abroad to expand the company to make it viable while still offering a product at a price their customers are happy to pay. Hence, today Traeger pellet grills are made in China.

This unit, made in Ponca City, Oklahoma runs $1,815USD and is designed to be the everything pellet grill. It has a direct flame broiler for searing and a large smoking chamber for barbecue. It is also made entirely of high quality stainless steel. If you live in a corrosive environment, then this might be the perfect pellet cooker for you. On the other hand, this grill lacks modern technology. The controller is good and accurate, but you don’t get WiFi or any type of connectivity you find on many other pellet units. This is a great grill from great people, but it is also comparatively basic.

    Grilla Grill Premieres Unique Technology

Grilla Alpha Connect Pellet Grill Overview | Grilla Grills Best New WiFi Wood Smoker 2021

A little over a decade ago, Graham and Shidler thought it would be a good idea to start manufacturing pellet grills as a side venture to Fahrenheit Technologies, Inc., a wood furnace company, located in Holland, Michigan.

Although pellet grills were still fairly new to the BBQ and grilling community, they saw a big opportunity to jump into this market.

Following hundreds of design hours, the official Grilla Grill prototype was born in 2012, producing fall-off-the-bone tenderness that will make your grilled or smoked meat the talk of the barbecue.

Not only was the Gorilla marketing catchy and clever, the extremely effective convection heat technology was impressive and immediately set the Grilla Grill apart from its competitors.

The good news: When Grillas signature pellet grill first hit the market, it was greeted with positive reviews from its customers :

The bad news: The $1,500 price tag was a bit too high for the target market. After several years of operation Grilla Grills decided it was time to reevaluate their business operations.

Grilla Grills Increased Use Of Stainless Steel

As Mark discusses in the video above, the firepot, heat deflector and grease tray in the Grilla Grills Silverbac are all made from stainless steel, where thats not the case in the ZGrill 700 series pellet grills. Furthermore, the cooking racks on the Silverbac are also made from stainless steel, which is not the case on the ZGrill. The cooking racks on the ZGrill 700 series are carbon steel with a porcelain coating.

The carbon steel porcelain-coated racks used on the ZGrill keep the cost of the pellet grills down but at the expense of durability: Image ZGrills.com

As Mark references in the video above, cooking racks are often the first thing to go. This is generally true with grills where carbon steel racks come into contact with direct heat, in other words, the flames from the fire below. In the case of the ZGrill pellet grills, they do not offer direct heat from the flames, therefore the cooking racks on the ZGrill will likely last longer than a typical charcoal grill for instance.

However, another advantage of the stainless steel racks on the Grilla Grills Silverbac is they will be easier to clean. While Im discussing cooking racks, both the ZGrills and Grilla Grills pellet grills can benefit from a set of aluminium GrillGrates.
