How We Tested Gas Grills

Over the course of four days in Spring 2017, we put our gas grills through a battery of tests designed to demonstrate their qualities and highlight their differences. We cooked burgers on high heat to see how well the grills seared meat and how intense and even was the heat they could generate across the whole grate surface. We slow-grilled cut-up chickens to see if the grills could hold a low temperature evenly across the whole grate. And we roasted whole chickens indirectly on both low and high heat to see if the grills could create browned skin and perfectly cook meat without charring. Sam Sifton, editor of the Cooking section of The New York Times joined us for these tests. In 2018 we repeated these tests, pitting the new Weber Spirit II E-310 against our upgrade pick, the Weber Genesis II E-310.

For the high-heat, whole-grate burger testan indicator of the grills ability to pump out uniform, high heat without creating an infernowe heated the grills on high with their lids down for 15 minutes . We then oiled the grates and distributed 12 to 15 6-ounce patties across the whole cooking surface. While the burgers cooked we kept an eye out for flare-upstheyre not desirable, as they char the meat and create rancid smokeand looked at the evenness of cooking on the different areas of the grates. After about 10 minutes of cooking , we compared how well each grill had seared the burgers, looked for any patties that were charred or still unacceptably raw, and took a taste.

Our Pick: Weber Spirit Ii E

*At the time of publishing, the price was $500.

The Weber Spirit II E-310 is the best gas grill for most people, offering an unrivaled combination of top-notch grilling performance, a versatile three-burner design, durability, and an affordable price. It excelled at every test, producing the best sear of any grill on our burgers and equaling or outdoing the others on our barbecue chicken and whole roasted chickens. Its overall compact size suits almost any patio or deck, but its grilling surface is big enough to cook a complete meal for a family, or a dozen burgers for a party. With a thick cast-aluminum firebox, itll last for years. The company has refined the Spirits design for decades, too this version incorporates the easily accessible externally mounted tank and under-grill shelf from the Genesis II line. On top of this, its a particularly easy grill to assemble, maintain, and use and it comes in four colors . Finally, at its current price of around $500, its a terrific value.

With 424 square inches of cooking space, the Spirit II E-310 can easily accommodate 12 large hamburgers, two whole or cut-up chickens, or a large cut like brisket for smoking. Or it can cook a complete meal for five or six peoplethe three-burner design means you can, for instance, sear steak or fish on one side of the grill and cook vegetables on lower heat on the other. And you can cook them really well.

Are All Imported Grills Bad

Does this mean all imported grills are bad? Notnecessarily. But as mentioned earlier, they are not held to the same standardsthat American-made grills are held to. You can feel the quality difference.

BBQ Depot does sell some imported brandsincluding Summerset and Blaze. This is because these brands have shown product support. It may take months andmonths for parts, but eventually those parts become available. With that being said, there are definitely quality issues as well asmanufacturing choices that can end up turning into a headache for the consumer. For example, these grills use flame thrower valves. If you need to replaceyour ignition electrode, you will have to replace the entire valve. Thiscreates a large expense for an inexpensive part. Since the electrode is builtinto the valve, there is not a replacement for it.

There is much that could be said about eachindividual brand that imports their grills. Since a large part of our businessinvolves service and selling replacement parts, we are frequently put in thedifficult position of explaining to customers why there is no product supportfor their grills.

Because of this, we have had to make thedifficult choice of not displaying imported grills in our showroom. When wedisplay a grill and a customer purchases that grill, they hold us accountablefor the quality of the product. Due to the many inconsistencies, we had noalternative but to display products we can stand behind, like our American-madegrills.

Primo 778 Xl Ceramic Smoker Charcoal Grill

Top 5 gas grill brands made in the USA (or Canada) Not made in china

The first thing youll notice about this grill is the ceramic exterior finish. The Primo 778 XL is made with a superior ceramic finish that boasts a protective and scratch-resistant porcelain glaze.

You get 400-square inches of space available to cook on. This alone should be plenty of space, but you can add more. Using the rack extensions, you can increase the size up to almost 680-square inches. This is perfect for large families or backyard gatherings.

One potential disadvantage is the high price of this grill. In fact, this grill has the highest price on the list, but the cost is justifiable for two main reasons. First, the ceramic material is incredibly durable. Second, the American craftsmanship typically results in a higher price.

The Most Ludicrous Grill Ever Made Gold

Napoleon Rogue SE425 Gas BBQ Grill

Okay, so this grill isnt actually for sale.

Australian company BeefEater made this one-of-a-kind grill by covering one of their Series 6 LS4000s burners in 24-carat gold for the 2007 Sydney Home Show. While you cant buy one, it does show that the sky really is the limit when it comes down to creating high-end grills.

This entire grill is completely covered with gold, from the nuts and bolts down to the grill rack, making this model the most expensive grill in the entire world.

Of course, its actual value varies depending on the price of gold on any given day, but back when it was created, it would have been worth around the equivalent of 50 non-gold coated BeefEater deluxe grills.

While gold does have a lower melting point than stainless steel, it is still suitable for grills, having a melting point of around 2,000. This is much lower than youll need to grill your average steak, should you ever be in the market to commission yourself something similar.

So, it just goes to show that even if some high-end grills are a little pricey, they certainly arent crazy money like this extravagant piece.

History Of Napoleon Grills:

Napoleon was initially known as Wolf Steel Ltd. In 1976, the firm began out as a maker of steel railings.

Wolfgang Schroeter and his wife, Ingrid , started building wood-burning stoves in their garage in Barrie, Ontario.

Fireplace sales were seasonal, so the company had to expel a few workers every season or pay for labor idle hours.

Wolfgang decided to add a new product to their fireplace range to avoid this loss of both the company and employees. A thing that would perfectly complement their existing range was barbeque grills.

In 1995, the company officially introduced barbecue grills to its product line, and thats when Napoleon was formed as a company. The company soon gained recognition outside the North American market.

In 2010, the company opened branch offices in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Austria and opened distribution centers in several other countries. Napoleon also had the honor of inventing the smallest BTU-size gas furnace in 2013.

Napoleon achieved several International Recognitions Awards, with the Queen Elizabeth II Medal in 2012 being the most notable.

In 2018, the founders stepped down from the companys management, and their sons Christopher and Stephen were appointed as new co-CEOs.
