Cooking Cod On A Griddle
You can cook cod on a griddle as easily as you cook a piece of salmon. It’s a good idea to leave the skin on to prevent the salmon from falling apart as you cook it. You can always remove it later on if you don’t like to eat the fish skin. The method for cooking a piece of cod is the same as cooking a piece of salmon. Around a couple of minutes on the griddle on each side should be sufficient. However, if your piece of cod is very thick, you may need to cook it a little longer.
How To Test When The Salmon Is Cooked
To test the doneness of meat and fish a digital probe thermometer is an extremely useful tool. Check the internal temperature by inserting the probe into the centre of the thickest part of the salmon. The salmon will be perfectly cooked when the internal temperature reaches 50C.
To test if the salmon is cooked through, without using a thermometer, slide a small knife into the centre of the thickest part. Remove the knife and press it to your lip. If the knife is hot then the salmon is cooked through.
Do You Flip Salmon When Pan Frying
In order to cook your salmon evenly, it is important to flip it when pan frying. Always start with the skinless side first. After around 3-5 minutes, you should flip it over onto the skin side and cook for a further 3-5 minutes. If you don’t flip, you could end up with one side burnt and one side undercooked.

Why A Pellet Grill
Over the last couple of years, my husband and I had heard really marvelous things about wood pellet grills. Our friends all told us how much they loved them, but we didn’t think it was worth the added expense. We already had a natural gas BBQ why buy something else that would do basically the same thing? Boy, were we wrong.
This spring, it has been hot, so we decided to start the barbecue early. However, the burner on one side no longer worked. So it was time to buy another one. We did a bunch of research and decided that it was healthier to eat food over wood instead of food cooked over burnt gas.
So, we decided to purchase a Pit Boss smoker 8-1 grill that uses 100% wood pellets as fuel instead of gas and propane. From the first time we used it, we were hooked. We love using it. It adds so much flavor. This is not a sponsored post we love it that much.

Can You Cook Frozen Salmon On The Grill
May 28, 2019
Can you cook frozen salmon on the grill? The procrastinators and the people with a hard time remembering to take fish out of the freezers need to know.
I have spent a lot of time on the subject of frozen salmon since I am so forgetful. How to Cook Salmon from Frozen and How to Cook Salmon from Frozen Without Thawing in the Oven are both excellent posts for those who dont have time to wait for their salmon to thaw.
Now, it is time to see if a grill will destroy frozen salmon or will it be perfect? It wasnt hard to find out!
Frozen salmon is so easy to work with and it is in every freezer section . When you look at the nutrition of salmon you can see why registered dietiticians advise eating it. Look at all that protein with almost zero fat! The fat you will get from fish is the good fat AKA Omega-3-Fatty acids.
Fish has it all.
I love the frozen packages that are in a single serving size. The packaging makes it easy to pull out just what I need and not waist any fish. We all know salmon is expensive so we dont want to make too much of it.
When it is frozen it is a bit tricky to get out of the package. Run it under some cool water and then use a set of scissors to free it.
I took the frozen fillets and brushed some extra virgin olive oil on the outside in an attempt to keep the fish from sticking to the grill grate.
My grill is a Weber Spirit . It has two sets of burners so it allows the kind of cooking that makes it possible to grill frozen salmon.

How Thick Is Your Piece Of Salmon
Now that we know how long we want to cook our salmon, we can drill it down. Lets go with the middle of the road and shoot for a medium cooked piece of salmon, by removing it from the heat when it reaches 130°F.
If you preheat the grill or oven to 400°F and our fish is about 1 thick at the thickest part, it will be cooked in about 12 minutes. For a thicker salmon portion add 4 minutes of cooking time for every additional 1/2 of thickness.
If you invest in a digital thermometer, you really cant go wrong.
Grilling Salmon On A Gas Grill
Cooking salmon on a gas grill is absolutely the best choice. We all like a nice smoky flavor to our meat, but lets face it: over charcoal or wood, the flavor of the salmon is going to get overwhelmed, unless you use a marinade so strong that youre likely not tasting the fish anyway . Heres a basic rundown of what to do to get the most out of grilled salmon-
First off, you want to be sure of your fish. If you didnt catch the salmon yourself, you want to look for firm filets with deep color. They should look a little wet, and the cut edges should be smooth. Pale or ragged looking salmon is old salmon- move on. If you buy packaged fish, there shouldnt be any liquid visible Also, keep in mind that this is a mild fish. It wont smell all that strong if its fresh. Whole salmon should have bright red gills, clear eyes, and glossy skin.
Salmon is a skin-on fish. You wont have any trouble removing the skin after grilling if you dont want to eat it. This is recommended even for those who prefer the foil-packet method to avoid clean-up. Cooked salmon flakes easily, and the skin will keep your fish from crumbling apart during handling.
To check if your salmon is done, take a knife and pierce the thickest part of the meat. If its opaque and flakes easily when you tug a little, then its good to go. Salmon will cook a little after you remove it from the grill, so be careful not to overdo it or youll be serving up crispy fish-flakes.

How Long Do You Cook Salmon On A Bbq And At What Temperature
Salmon is best cooked at a medium-high temperature. If the grill is too hot the salmon will burn. However, if the temperature is too low the salmon is likely to stick to the grill. A salmon fillet cooked directly on the metal BBQ grill will require about 3 mins cooking time on each side, so 6 mins in total. An 850g side of salmon will require cooking for about 20 mins. The BBQ must reach the desired temperature before putting the fish onto the grill.
If the temperature continues to climb the fish is likely to stick. Brush the fish with oil to reduce the likelihood of it sticking to the grill. Salmon is a robust fish that can withstand the intense heat from a BBQ. The cooking time will vary based on the thickness and size of the piece of salmon that you are BBQing, as well at the heat of the BBQ. A whole side of salmon can be ungainly and tricky to flip. So when cooking a whole side of salmon we recommend cooked en papillote or using a fish basket.

Choose your charcoal fuel. Because they burn at higher temperature and have none of the questionable fillers or binders, I like all-natural briquettes made form pure hardwoods but shaped in the familiar pillow shape. From hardwood to lump charcoal or briquettes, there are many types of charcoal available these days and each imparts a different flavor and ease in lightingand lasting. Briquettes now come in a variety of flavors that emulate hard wood flavors like cherry or oak, hickory, mesquite, and more.
No lighter fluid required. Avoid using charcoal fluid and its chemical taste. Instead, top the briquettes with a charcoal chimney starter stuffed with a few wadded up pieces of newspaper at the bottom. Light the newspaper, then watch as the fire and heat rise, starting the briquettes naturally. Once the briquettes are lightly covered with white ash, use barbecue mitts to empty the chimney starter and distribute the briquette coals on the bottom rack of the kettle.
TIME TIP: Plan on about 20 minutes for the charcoal to be grill ready.
Heidi’s Personal Grilling Rules
When I am grilling, I make the salmon my first priority. I know this may sound silly, but I don’t even like to have a conversation with someone while I have fish on the grill. It cooks fast and it is super easy to overcook. I like to have a glass of wine and my timer set. I started this “timer rule” when I nearly overcooked 6 pounds of salmon at a dinner party. I had had a few drinks and was deep in conversation and nearly ruined dinner. If something like this does happen to you, whatever you do, don’t point it out to everyone that the salmon is overcooked. Most people will still think it is delicious and probably won’t even notice if it is a little overcooked, unless you point it out.

Salmon Grilling Temperatures And Internal Doneness
Although the USDA recommends cooking fish to an internal temperature of 145°F, many people feel like at that temperature, the salmon will be overdone. To avoid overcooking salmon, cook until the internal temperature reaches 125 to 130°F on an instant-read thermometer then remove from heat and let it rest for 5 minutes. The internal temperature continues to rise while it rests.

There is a very small risk when it comes to eating undercooked salmon. However, as raw salmon is usually safe to eat, chances are you’ll be absolutely fine as long as the salmon that you ate was either very fresh or had been frozen. On the other hand, if you are pregnant or have a compromised immune system, we recommend that you avoid undercooked or raw salmon. Take a little extra time to make sure your fish is really thoroughly cooked to avoid any potential risk.

The Best Grill Temperature For Grilled Salmon
Grill the salmon on a 450°-500° F hot grill. The number one way to ensure success when grilling fish is a smoking hot grill. Cook for skin side down for about 6-8 minutes on hot grates to ensure the fish wont stick to the grates and will lift easily away once its done.
Oil the fish, not the grill. Contrary to popular belief, theres no need to oil the grill grates. Oiling the fish itself improves the chances of it releasing more easily from the grates to lookand tastebetter. Again, a neutral-flavored oil with a high smoke point like grape seed oil is a good one to choose.
