How To Make A Grilled Cheese Sandwich

While simple to do, making a good grilled cheese at home is somewhat of an art .

There is a purpose to the way you want to arrange your ingredients, so that 1) the cheese melts, 2) the bread doesnt burn, and 3) things dont fall apart!

Below are some tips and secrets to keep in mind when cooking grilled cheese:

  • Do not cut your bread too thick, or else it will be tricky to get the cheese to melt without burning the bread. Aim to cut your bread in 1/2-inch slices, if possible.
  • Cut all inside ingredients very thin, to avoid the same situation above! For this sandwich recipe, that means thin slices of the cheddar, camembert, and apples.
  • Place the cheeses on the bread first, again to ensure that they will melt. For this recipe, I put the cheddar on one slice and the camembert on the other slice.
  • Place the herbs, lemon zest, and any other seasonings as desired directly on the cheese. This will ensure that those ingredients stick!
  • Be sure to add some sort of cooking oil or butter to the outsides of the bread. My favourite to use is this avocado oil spray it adds zero flavour and sprays easily over the slices. You end up with a light, even coating!
  • Cook your sandwich on a pan over medium heat. Use a spatula to press down on the sandwich, and be sure to regularly check the underside to make sure youre not burning the bread. The bread should be lightly browned and toasty when done.
  • Should I Use Mayonnaise Or Butter

    How to make a Traditional and a Gourmet Grilled Cheese Sandwich

    This recipe uses mayonnaise instead of butter on the outside of the bread. I know this might seem odd, but take it from a grilled cheese connoisseur that using mayo is a total game changer. First, mayo is easier to spread so you use less of it which allows the sourdough to crisp up without feeling greasy and you still get the buttery flavor by toasting the grilled cheese in butter. Win-win! Secondly, mayonnaise has a higher smoking point than butter which means it takes longer for the bread to get that golden crispy outside which is what we want so the cheese has more time to melt.

    This grilled cheese recipe uses both goat cheese and Gruyere for richness, depth of flavor, creaminess and ooey gooey cheesiness. Goat cheese is a type of cheese made from goats milk. It comes in different flavors and textures from crumbly to creamy, young to mature, mild to tangy. For this recipe, we want fresh goat cheese, typically sold in a log with the specialty cheeses in the deli department. Its tangy and earthy with a soft, spreadable texture.

    Gruyere is a semi-hard, pale yellow Swiss cheese made of whole milk. Its the consummate melting cheese thats slightly sweet, slightly salty, creamy, nutty and boasts enough flavor to cut through the richness of the grilled cheese and its a match made in heaven with caramelized onions. You can purchase an 8 oz. block with the specialty cheeses at your grocery store. If you have the option to purchase aged Gruyere, then go with that, as the flavors become more complex as the cheese matures.

    Best Bread For Gourmet Grilled Cheese

    While there are some awesome, high-quality pre-sliced breads available, they just dont really cut it for the gourmet effect were going for in this recipe. I highly recommend picking up an artisan loaf of bread from your local bakery, if possible.

    I always love a good sourdough for making a gourmet grilled cheese . If you can find one, I think a nice cranberry bread would add an even greater touch of flavour to this recipe!

    Fancy Schmancy Grilled Cheese
    • Add fresh herbs. Everything tastes better with fresh herbs! If youve got a little thyme, basil, or rosemary in the fridge, sprinkle some on top of the cheese before covering.
    • Butter the griddle, not the bread. Buttering the griddle instead of the slices of bread does two things. It eliminates the gouge marks from trying to spread hard butter on soft bread. Second, it toasts the bread without a greasy over-saturation from the butter and cheese. That means your bread will remain soft and dry on the inside with a golden toasted crust, instead of creating two greasy sponges with cheese in the middle.
    • Grill over medium heat. Grilling your grilled cheese over medium heat allows the cheese to melt, without burning the bread. Golden bread + melted cheese = great grilled cheese
    • Cover when grilling the first slice. I like to use a metal bowl or skillet to cover the sandwiches when Im grilling the first slice of bread. By covering the sandwich, youre capturing the heat and helping the cheese to melt all the way through, without over-browning the bread. Once the first side is golden-brown, remove the cover and grill the second side without it, so the toasted bread will stay crisp.

    If you follow these steps, you should be able to cook your grilled cheese sandwich for 2-4 minutes per side and end up with golden grilled cheese perfection!

    Air Fryer Grilled Cheese

    Using the air fryer is a very simple way to achieve a crunchy grilled cheese. It cooks your food in minutes and is a very low maintenance way to prepare a perfect grilled cheese!

    Place Your Sandwich On Your Grill Or Skillet

    When your cooking surface is hot, gently place the sandwich in. Cook the grilled cheese with ham for around 4 minutes, until it the cheese is melted and it is grilled perfectly.
