How To Cook An Air Fryer Grilled Cheese
Making an air fryer grilled cheese is even easier than making it on the stovetop!
All you need to do is to add the cheese to one slice of bread then put the other slice on top.
Butter both sides of the sandwich and put it in the air fryer.
Set the air fryer at 370F degrees for 4 minutes and press start.
When the timer goes off, flip it and put it in for 3 more minutes at 370F degrees.
After that, remove the grilled cheese from the air fryer, slice it and serve it immediately.
How Long Do You Cook Grilled Cheese On Both Sides
For bread thats browned just right and cheese thats super gooey, cook grilled cheese for a total of approximately 4 minutes on each side. Allow one side of the sandwich to cook for 2 minutes, then flip. The bread will only be slightly browned at this point. Cook the other side for an additional 2 minutes, flip and repeat for a total cook time of about 10-15 minutes.
There are also various grilled cheese appliances on the market, like panini presses, sandwich makers, and sandwich toasters, allowing you to customize the toasting settings to take the guesswork out of cooking time.
Can You Make A Grilled Cheese In The Microwave
YES! It’s mind-blowingly awesome and true! With just 15-30 seconds in the microwave, you can have hot and gooey melted cheese between soft and crispy bread. The longest part is waiting on the toaster, but it’s fine because even that doesn’t take more than a minute or two!
If you want your grilled cheese to be “less soft” with the bread and to keep more of the crispness, wrap it in a paper towel before heating it in the microwave to help absorb some excess moisture.

How Hot Should Your Skillet Be
High heat will burn the exterior of your bread before your cheese gets a chance to melt. Moderate heat is the way to go.
Heres a timeline:
- Put your heavy skillet on the stovetop
- Turn the burner on medium-low or medium
- As the skillet heats, prep your cheese
- Butter the bread
- Lay the sandwich in the skilletby this time, the temperature is perfect
If you are grilling sandwiches one at a time, you may find you need to turn the heat down a little as you do your second sandwich. The pan seems to hit a sweet spot around sandwich number two.

The Best Pan For Grilled Cheese
The pan is just as important, if not more so, than the bread and cheese. A flimsy skillet will grill your sandwich unevenly. A skillet thats too small makes it hard to maneuver the sandwich.
For one sandwich at a time, I like a 10-inch cast-iron skillet.
Grilled cheese sandwiches dont really stick to the pan, so if you dont have a nonstick pan, its fine. I prefer a cast-iron pan.

Which Air Fryer Do I Use
After doing extensive air fryer research, I decided on this GoWise 5.8 quart Air Fryer.
I should also say that this isn’t sponsored but if you order from Amazon using any of these links or images, I get a small kickback!
I went with the 5.8 quart because it’s the perfect size for me and my family. It is large enough to cook two sandwiches in, a whole chicken, or a big batch of fries without things getting too crowded.
Anything smaller would have been kind of pointless to me. It also has more temperature controls and more cooking options than a lot of the other air fryers on the market do. I also loved that it came with a whole entire cookbook and temperature manual for various foods.
How To Make The Perfect Grilled Cheese
I never really had the grandparent experience. My moms parents both died in a car accident long before I was born and while I knew my dads parents, they were much older and my grandma had Alzheimers for most of the time I knew her. But I did have the most fantastic next-door neighbor. Her name was Mrs. Miner and she used to let me hang out at her house and talk her ear off and she would make me grilled cheese sandwiches. This might not sound like a big deal, but my mom made grilled cheese sandwiches in the microwave And later, after my mom died, my step-mom made them in the oven.
Those are not acceptable alternatives.
Grilled cheese sandwiches are made in a pan. With butter. Is it something you should eat every day? No. Is it something you should eat sometimes? Yes. But only if its made in a pan. With butter.
I didnt think knowing how to make grilled cheese sandwiches was that big of a deal until recently, I went to a sandwich chain and got their grown-up grilled cheese and it wasnt right. And I thought maybe it was a fluke, so I ordered it another time and it was still not right. And then I went to a local restaurant that specialized in fancy grilled cheeseall sorts of cheese, caramelized onions, figs and jams and cured meats and pepper jellies. And I thought surely they would get it right, this restaurant that specialized in grilled cheese.

Bonus Tip: Delicious Additions
We recommend adding these items to your grilled cheese for a little flavor boost:
Other cheeses: Goat cheese, cream cheese and a dusting of finely shredded Parmesan dont melt, but they taste great. Spreadable cheese on the bread can even help act as glue.
Meat: A small slice of ham or roast beef can add a lot of flavor to a grilled cheese. Avoid more subtle meats like turkey. Save it for turkey melts .
Fruit and jams: Fruit, nuts and Brie are a natural combination that makes fantastic sandwiches.
Crunchy items: Panko, potato chips, corn flakes and crumbled croutons all add a little extra texture to your sandwich, which can be a nice change from the normally soft grilled cheese.
And The Best Cheese For Grilled Cheese Is

Were partial to regular old cheddar cheesesharp or medium, depending on your preference but a great grilled cheese sandwich can be made out of lots of different cheeses, and our grilled cheese recipe will work with almost any cheese you favor. Here are a few great melters to try:
- Monterey Jack. This mild, creamy white cheese is an even better melter than cheddar, and is extra lovely mixed with a little sharp cheddar.
- Gruyère. Nutty and delightfully salty, Gruyère is an Alpine-style cheese that is widely available in the U.S. and makes for a richly flavorful grilled cheese.
- Raclette. Another gorgeous Alpine-style cheese that is quite literally made for melting. This washed-rind cheese is funkier than Gruyère and will definitely take your grilled cheese into grown-up territory.
- Blue / Chevré. Tangy chevré or sharp blue cheeses can be delicious additions to a grilled cheese, but we like to use them sparingly and coupled with mild, melty cheeses like Jack or cheddar.

How To Master A Classic Grilled Cheese
Here are our tips for getting this classic comfort food just right.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT INGREDIENTS
A grilled cheese presents its elements bare, without the safety net of side dishes or elaborate presentation. It’s a showcase for the cheese select one that melts evenly, such as cheddar, Swiss, or Monterey Jack. That said, almost any cheese will do. After all, even if eating the sandwich gets messy, it’ll be polished off quickly — another triumph of the true art of cooking.
Choose breads and accompaniments that will flatter the cheese. The bread should be thick enough that it’s crisp outside and soft inside, but not so hefty as to bury the cheese. A slightly acidic or tart partner, such as slices of tomato or pickle, will nicely offset the cheese’s richness. Go with a dressy classic, such as croque monsieur, or create an uncomplicated pairing, such as Swiss with turkey and mustard.
KNOW WHEN TO FLIP
To properly melt the cheese without burning the bread, cook the sandwich on one side over medium-low heat flip it as it begins to turn golden brown. Grill the other side, then flip the sandwich back onto the first side to reheat. Grilling both sides at once, whether in a sandwich press or using a second heated skillet to press the sandwich as it cooks, is efficient but yields a much denser texture.
4 slices firm white sandwich bread
1/4 pound cheddar cheese, sliced 1/3 inch thick
Unsalted butter, room temperature
DIRECTIONS
Frying In Extra Butter
If you like extra crispy bread and a little more grease, you can add some butter to the pan to fry the grilled cheese. Just watch for the browning of the butter solids, you dont want that to become burnt. If this happens, wipe the pan clean if needed, and in between batches when making more than two sandwiches.

Legend has it that the croque monsieur, the French version of grilled cheese , came into existence when some early 20th-century workmen in France left their ham-and-cheese sandwiches next to a hot radiator all morning. If it was possible then, its possible nowalthough we have a feeling that the method might leave the bread a bit soggy. But hey, itll melt your cheese in a pinch. Not Enough Butter Or Oil

Weve already established that you should use plenty of butter on the bread, but if youre having issues with grilled cheese sticking to the pan, you may need even more.
