How Does Infrared Gas Grill Work

Are Infrared Grills Hard To Clean

How Char-Broil TRU-Infrared Cooking Technology Works

The basics of cleaning an infrared grill are the same as for any grill, but take extra caution in cleaning the heating element and infrared surface. At least twice a year, an infrared grill should be inspected for wear, paying close attention to any damage to the heating element, the infrared plate and the grate.

Should I Use Infrared Radiation To Cook My Food

There are two major benefits to using infrared radiation for cooking, most notably with grilling. The first is the directness of the heat source: Since infrared burners use specific ceramic, metal or glass to minimize the output of convection heat, the grill concentrates only radiation heat on the food. Infrared grill companies say this prevents the drying out of food on the grill from the convective heat , some claiming food retains up to 35% more of its juice, but it is difficult to objectively test this metric. However, the directness of infrared radiation is objectively true: Its energy waves can move in all directions and are not affected by air turbulence until the heat reaches a solid object. In short, infrared radiation ensures food is heated via radiation and not convection, and thus provides far more even, consistent heat across the entire grill.

    What Is The Stall

At a low cooking temperature such as 125°C, the evaporation rate can be so great that the surface and interior of the meat can stick at around 65°C 75°C and remain there for hours on end. This phenomenon is called the stall and is feared by many. This freak of nature will not happen if the oven is at a higher temperature, say 165°C +.Cooking with the stall actually has a few benefits. .

    Ceramic Infrared Burner System

    How Does An Infrared Gas

Ceramic infrared burner systems feature a stainless steel burner topped with a ceramic surface, with the cooking grid sitting a few inches above the burner surface. This ceramic surface produces many tiny flames that get extremely hot, quickly and and evenly. On the cooking surface, you can expect a temperature range of roughly 600-1000 degrees. The direct flame access of the food drippings to these burners may cause some quick flare ups, which some folks prefer for the flame-kiss charring. This burner system is found on brands like Solaire, and is great for searing meats hot and fast, but will not reach lower temperatures. However, Lynx grills offer a patented Trident ceramic infrared burner which is capable of reaching a low temperature of 300 degrees, while also offering an intense high heat of up to 1,000 degrees.

Pros: Infrared Grills Cook Food Quickly

Because of their mega-high temperatures, infrared grills cook very, very fast. And for some types of grilling, that happens to be exactly what you want. The most notable example of this is steak.

The key to cooking a steak is cooking as quickly as possible over as high a heat as possible. The hotter and quicker, the better. The reason being that steaks get tougher the longer they spend over the heat. Your goal with cooking one, then, is to sear the outside and produce a flavorful brown crust while ensuring that the interior remains tender and juicy.

And an infrared grill with its cooking temperature approaching 1,000 F happens to be perfect for that. It might only take a minute on each side and even less for thin cuts like skirt steak.

Another advantage to infrared grills is that they aren’t prone to flare-ups since anything that drips from the food is instantly vaporized when it hits the glass or ceramic.

    What Exactly Is Infrared Energy

Infrared light/ radiation/ energy is a section of the electromagnetic spectrum. Infrared light has a wavelength slightly more than visible red light.

We cannot see it, but we can feel its heat. Once these waves hit a surface, they transfer their energy to it right away. The sunburns we get at the beach are a direct result of infrared waves hitting our skin.

They cant penetrate the skin with that heat, just the surface, as this needs a much shorter wavelength. This is actually what blue light and ultraviolet waves can do.

The same principle applies to many cooking appliances. There are various ways to produce infrared red energy, and mostly its used as a quick and easy way to cook or heat up food.

Its also quite efficient in terms of power consumption. I believe that every household has a toaster, right? Thats an infrared appliance, and a charcoal grill also uses radiating heat to cook food.

What Is An Infrared Grill How Do They Work

To understand this fully we need to understand the difference between infrared and your usual go-to cooking method, which is usually either grilling with charcoal or gas-fired grilling.

Both these methods are convection cooking, in that the charcoal or gas flames heat the air between the fire and the food.

This hot air circulates around the food as it heats, which is known as a convection current.

This is the reason you close the lid while cooking, as it stops the hot air from escaping and allows the temperature to sit at a reasonably constant temperature, much like a traditional oven.

    Infrared is different.

In simple terms, it is part of the electromagnetic spectrum, which measures the length and speed of waves. Only a small part of the spectrum is visible to the human eye as visible light, and IR is just outside of this scope, and thus it is invisible to us. However, because it heats things, we can feel, see and taste the effect of it.

It is a lot like the sun. The suns energy is made up of around 50% infrared, and this is why pavements are hot to the touch in summer, yet we cannot see the heating process.

An IR grill uses a gas burner to heat a plate made of metal, ceramic, or glass and in turn produces infrared waves as opposed to just hot air. This plate heats quicker than just air and reaches a much higher temperature much faster.

The infrared waves created are what heats the surface of an object, such as meat, quicker than circulating hot air can.

How Can A Grill Cook Food With Light

    How TRU-Infrared Grilling Works

    An infrared grill uses a specialized frequency of light, sometimes referred to as radiant heat or infrared energy, which is designed to cook just about anything to perfection! Thats because it is the same frequency of electromagnetic radiation that a conventional grill would generate, and its the frequency of radiant heat that determines how your food will be cooked. Therefore, it functions as a real grill without the flame!;

Is An Infrared Side Burner Worth It

Preheating the IR side burner is important, especially if you want those grills hot enough to sear your meat properly. The heat that radiates through to cook your food and heat your grill grate is the infrared. Due to the focused heat, infrared burners will use less gas than the main burners on your barbecue.

Before we get into it, I want to let everyone know that Char-Broil has NOT paid me to endorse or review their product. This post is all me.

Grilling season is here. Finally. For our long-time readers, you know Im on the grill at least 4 nights a week, Spring through Fall. And when we moved to Idaho, I actually gave my grill away in hopes of getting a new one. But as you know, pretty much nothing went as planned when we moved here, so the grill took a back seat to higher priorities.

Last summer, during our monthlong stretch of homelessness, I was helping my mom make dinner at their house. She asked me to cook something on their grill, so I went out and fired it up. I had never used a Char-Broil Tru Infrared grill, but it didnt seem all that different. A propane tank, grill grate, lid, knobs. Everything in its proper place. But the real magic was inside.

I cooked pork tenderloin for 26 people that night. It all went on the grill at the same time, and it all came off the grill at the same time. I had never used a grill that heated so evenly. Not a single cold spot on the whole thing. Ive used Weber grills and Stok and everything in between. They all pale in comparison.

If I had one critique to make on this grill, it would be um ok, Ive got nothin. Seriously, its amazing, and cleaning it is also way easier than other gas grills. There are just two trays in the bottom that catch everything clean those, and the grill grates every so often. Thats it.

What Is An Infrared Grill And How Do They Work

Infrared grills, also known as IR grills, use infrared radiation to cook your food. To do this, a regular gas grill gets started up, then has a specialized plate placed on top as a cooktop. The heatwaves from the grill get spread through the plate, which distributes the heat evenly throughout the plate.

As opposed to producing just hot air, an infrared grill produces infrared waves. These waves are what heat up the surface of an object, such as a slab of meat. Since the plates on an infrared grill are designed to conduct heat, these grills have a notoriously fast heat-up time.

These types of grills work similar to the sun. The energy of the sun consists of roughly 50% infrared, which is why roadways are very hot to the touch in the summer, but we cannot visibly see the heating process.

How To Cook With An Infrared Burner On A Gas Grill

  • How to Cook Boneless Top Chuck Steak in the Broiler
  • Infrared burners have been used by restaurants for many years to quickly cook steaks and other thick cuts of meat. Regular gas and charcoal grills use hot air to cook meat. Infrared burners, which are now available on home gas grills, cook food by quickly heating a ceramic plate underneath the wire grill rack to high temperatures. The infrared radiation that emanates from the plate immediately sears the outside of meat, locking in moisture and giving the meat a charcoal-like taste. Because infrared grills heat up and cook food quickly, it’s important to understand exactly how they work before attempting to use them.

Fire up the grill. Turn on the gas according to the instructions for your particular make and model, and turn on the infrared burner. Wait 1 to 2 minutes for the burner to heat up; infrared burners heat very quickly, so this won’t take as much time as a normal grill.

Place the meat on the wire rack above the infrared burner. Wait about one minute, then flip the meat and sear the other side. Because the infrared burner gets so hot and cooks meat so quickly, it’s best to use thick cuts of meat such as steaks and pork chops on an infrared grill. The burners tend to char thinner items such as fish and vegetables.

Remove the meat from the grill and cut into it to make sure it’s cooked thoroughly. Turn off the grill and let it cool.
