Grill Grate Cleaning Method: Vinegar + Baking Soda

  • Total time: 12+ hours
  • Rating: 2

The method: Remove cooled grates from the grill. Put them in a garbage bag and add 2 cups of vinegar and 1 cup of baking soda. Close up the bag and let the solution soak for 8 hours or overnight. Then, rinse the grates and scrub off any remaining food bits, using a ball of foil or a scrubby sponge.

The results: This is one of the methods that Arm & Hammer recommends and its fairly effective! The soak helped the bits wipe off and was fairly tough on grease. Im docking this method a bit, though, because its not really the most effective in terms of instant gratification. You have to have the foresight to do this the day before you want to grill, and it still does require a bit of time and effort on your part when the soaking part is over.

    Seasoning For Preventive Maintenance

Seasoning means applying oil often to keep it shiny and prevent rust for longer time. After cleaning your cast iron grill grate with mild rust removers, scrub them properly with steel wool for better results. Wash off with water only if the cleaner cannot be completely removed otherwise you can simply wipe up using a paper towel or dry cloth.

Now apply vegetable oil over the surface by rubbing few drops spread all over the area where black residue is present. This will protect your cast iron grate from re-rusting in coming days while making food easy to cook without sticking onto the surface. You should pre-season before cooking especially after scrubbing hard on grates with chemicals containing acid as this will prevent food from sticking while requiring less oil for cooking.

    Stubborn Stains On Your Grids

Unfortunately, from time to time, something stubborn sticks to your cooking surface, dont fret. Try these tips instead.

    • A sheet of foil, shiny side down, over the offending area while the grill is heating up to 500°F should loosen the problem. When the grill is hot just brush the offending detritus away with your grill brush. **Please consider wearing Heat Resistant Barbecue Gloves when doing this as the grill will be very hot.**

    • As a last resort, soaking your filthy stainless steel grids in hot water, then scrubbing gently will help get your grids squeaky clean. Just remember that in doing this, you are stripping off the seasoning you have built up and the grids will need to be re-seasoned. Dont worry you can reapply that seasoning by following our instructions on how to season your stainless steel cooking grates.

Why does the tinfoil trick work? The tinfoil will form a concentrated convection over the offending area. This also traps steam if there is moisture present. It will break down the baked on gunk so that it is easier to remove with a grill brush, very similar to when you turn on the self cleaning in your oven.

How to clean Weber Genesis grill grates

The Weber Genesis II E-330 is easy to clean. Since the burners are made of stainless steel, you can use a grill cleaning solution and a microfiber towel to get the job done.

Quick tip you can even use white vinegar to clean your bbq! Finish the cleaning just like how you would clean any other gas grill burners.

Make sure to have all the grates and rotisseries removed from the burner. You can do this by removing the burner. It is easier to have it cleaned when it is detached from the actual product. Make sure not to leave any grates to be assured that even heating will be given out by the product the next time you are cooking.

Once you finish cleaning the burners, before they are returned, make sure that they are dry. This will prevent water spots. If it is still wet, it can affect the quality of the food the next time you use the griller.

    Grill Brushes Can Be Hazardous

M1 Cast Iron Grate for 22" Kettle Grills in 2020

Grill brushes are like a balding man. When one hair falls out, more are sure to follow. The difference with metal bristles is they can be fatal if swallowed. .

If you do use a grill brush, choose a brush with a solid head. Check to see tightly packed bristles before and after each use.

If you notice missing bristles, discard that brush immediately. Friction is what holds bristles in place. When one bristle falls out, there is less pressure holding the remaining bristles in, and they start to shed en masse.Use the brush only after you are finished cooking where you can rinse or inspect the grate before cooking again.

How Often Should You Clean Your Grill

You should clean your grill after every time you use it, but thats not all. If you havent used your grill in a month or longer, you will need to clean it before you use it. While this may seem a little like overkill, its important to remember that a poorly-maintained grill is a potential health hazard. Besides, its not good for the grill, either.

When you cook your meals on a grill, the heat burns the fats and most of it drips to the surface of the grill.

The heated grill grates also burn the foods placed on them and some particles are left attached to it.

The pieces of food on the grill gates attract bacteria when the grill is left for some time without being used and this results in contamination.

Im pretty sure you dont want to serve your guests contaminated meals that will make them sick and the only way to prevent this from happening is by upholding cleanliness.

Now that you are aware of the need to keep your grill clean and free of germs, you are probably wondering how often you should do it.

Well, cleaning your grill thoroughly after every cookout is not always possible but you can at least clean the grates to remove the food particles attached to it before you store the grill.

How Do You Clean Your Porcelain Grill Plates Correctly

Theres scrubbing a grill plate, and then theres giving your grill plate the full cleaning it deserves. Most people dont realize it, but there is a technique to properly cleaning porcelain grill plates. Heres what you need to know

  • Start by making sure you got the right type of brush. Dont use steel wool here, since porcelain tends to be more sensitive than other materials. Use a soft bristle nylon brush instead.
  • Heat up your grill. The heat will help loosen up your food particles and grease. Once its heated and hot to the touch, turn the grill off and let it cool down. You dont want to get the nylon melted!
  • Spray your grill plates with vinegar cleaner and start scrubbing. You should be able to get your food to slough off fairly quickly. To get the best results, scrub in a diagonal pattern rather than a left-to-right or top-to-bottom pattern.
  • Put on heat-proof gloves, and flip the grill plate over. Start scrubbing the other side of the grill plates too, making sure to catch any major niches that you mightve missed the first time around.
  • Apply a light coat of olive oil over your grill plates once youre done. This helps prevent stuck food later on and preps your grill plates for your next cooking session.
  • Oftentimes, vinegar leaves behind an odor or taste on grill grates and may impact the taste of your food. To prevent this, turn up the heat on the grates again to help burn off any lingering vinegar.
