Add A Little Heat If You Like
The balsamic sauce to toss the Brussels sprouts is made simply with balsamic vinegar and honey. It brings the perfect sweet tart zing to the flavors. If you love spicy food, heres the place to add heat: add in about 1 teaspoon hot sauce into the balsamic sauce. It brings just the right amount of complexity. You can also then add drizzled hot sauce on top to taste.
Why Grilled Brussels Sprouts Are The Best Brussels Sprouts
One reason people have issues with Brussels sprouts is that they find them to be mushy and watery. Cooking them on the smoker helps overcome those issues to a great extent, but you still dont want to overcook them.
The smoke from the grill, as well as the heat, helps add layers of flavor between the smoky bitter notes and the sweet caramelized ones. However, leaving a bit of crunch to them makes the texture work best as well.

How To Make Brussels Sprouts On The Pellet Grill
Making grilled Brussels sprouts on the grill is easy and only takes about twenty minutes. There is a minor amount of prep, but not much.
Prep the sprouts
First, chop off the ends of the Brussels sprouts and pull off any loose leaves. You dont have to do this but it does make the finished dish look a little more elegant.
Why Smoked Brussels Sprouts Are Deliciously Different
Far too many people shy away from the humble Brussels sprout because they ate some very bitter-tasting concoction. What a sad fate for a veggie with so much to give! Like other cruciferous ingredients such as turnips, bok choy, cauliflower and kale, Brussels sprouts simply need some TLC to bring out their unique blend of texture and flavor.
In other words, they need a Grilla Grill master to land them back on the nice list!
When you learn how to smoke Brussels sprouts or even cook Brussels sprouts on a typical grill, you open a totally new door for a variety of dishes. Smoked Brussels sprouts take on the flavor of the smoke around them. That means if you choose a flavored type of wood pellet such as apple, pecan or hickory, your Brussels sprouts will offer a delicious hint of those undertones.
Stop pushing these dandy delicacies aside every time you walk through the produce aisle! Instead, embrace the Brussels sprouts and introduce your friends and family to an unexpected future-favorite menu item.

How Do You Get The Bitterness Out Of Them
Dont overcook them! Many people have an aversion to this wonderfully healthful veggie due to bitterness. This is likely due to overcooking. Brussels sprouts turn bitter when they get mushy and overcooked. This is why the parboiling plus grilling technique is a winner.
Another reason Brussels sprouts can be bitter is if they are not very fresh. It is best to buy them in season, which is in the fall. And buy sprouts that are about a small walnut size. It is easy to think the bigger ones will taste better, but the larger ones are not packed as tightly together, which can be a sign of older sprouts. Avoid those.
Fresh Or Frozen Brussels Sprouts
Fresh is always best when it comes to vegetables, but sometimes it can be a challenge to find fresh Brussels sprouts in the vegetable section of the grocery store. In season, you can occasionally find them still on the giant stalk. Brussel sprouts on the stalk look a bit like a monster in a sci-fi movie!
Of course, paying by the pound with sprouts on a stalk means paying for a lot of woody stalks that you wont be able to eat. Not unless you are part beaver and there are no trees handy to chew on.
So, frozen Brussels sprouts are always an option as well. If you do have to go with frozen Brussels sprouts, then be sure to pat off some of the ice crystals or excess water with a paper towel before adding them to the hot bacon grease. You dont want the oil to pop too much from the water.

If you’re trying to reap the health benefits of brussels sprouts but you’ve never been the biggest fan of their taste or texture, try throwing them on the grill. The flame-kissed finish brings out their flavorful notes better than boiling or steaming, but doesn’t add unnecessary calories the way frying does. Start by tossing the sprouts in oil, along with a few spices and other seasonings of choice, and sliding them onto metal skewers. Grill them over medium-high heat for about 5 minutes on each side and serve them hot and crispy, or toss them again in your oil and spice mixture for even bolder flavor.
Grilled Brussels Sprouts Flavor Variations
There are so many different ingredients you can add to this dish to customize it to your tastes!
- Cheese: Add a sprinkle of feta or finely grated parmesan cheese after the sprouts come off the grill.
- Vegetables: Feel free to add other veggies to skewers. Some great options include mushrooms, red onions or red bell peppers.
- Spices: You can add some additional herbs and spices to the mix such as cayenne pepper, garlic powder, onion powder or smoked paprika.
- Sauces: Serve your sprouts with a drizzle of balsamic glaze, or add a dipping sauce such as pesto, ranch or hummus.
- Bacon: Wrap each sprout in 1/4 piece of bacon before threading it onto the skewers, and double the cook time per side.
These Brussels sprouts are the perfect addition to almost any meal. Serve them alongside grilled steak or salmon, and watch the rave reviews come in!

Start By Steaming Your Brussel Sprouts
You can do this in the microwave or on the stovetop.
Start with clean, trimmed Brussels sprouts of roughly equal size. Ocean Mist Farms Season & Steam Whole Brussels makes this part a cinch since theyre already trimmed and washed. Just open the bag, season with salt and pepper, reseal the bag, and place it in the microwave with the steam valve side up. Microwave for 4-5 minutes, or until the Brussels sprouts are crisp-tender. Remove the bag from the microwave and carefully open the bag.
If you dont have a microwave, you can still enjoy the convenience of Season & Steam whole Brussels sprouts. Just place a large skillet with a tight-fitting lid on the stove. Add ½ inch of water to the pan and bring the water to a boil. Place the Brussels sprouts in the skillet and season the tops of them with salt and pepper. Cover the skillet with the lid and reduce the heat to medium-low. Cook for 3-4 minutes or until the sprouts are crisp-tender. Drain and pat dry with a paper towel or clean kitchen towel.

How To Make Grilled Brussels Sprouts: In A Grill Basket
Youll need a grill basket or aluminum foil to make grilled Brussels sprouts. Why? Brussels sprouts are fairly small, so if you dump them on the grill theyll fall through the grates. A grill basket keeps all the veggies together and heats them evenly. Here are some tips on how to do it :
- Preheat grill basket: Make sure to preheat the grill basket on the grill!
- Slice and season: Slice the Brussels sprouts in half. Mix them with olive oil to coat and salt.
- Grill about 12 to 16 minutes, until the veggies are charred and tender. Toss them a few times to ensure even cooking.
- Toss with balsamic sauce! Because the Brussels can come out slightly dry, the sauce gives them the perfect consistency.
