How To Clean A Charcoal Grill

I know my last post was geared to all those gas grill lovers out there, but fret not my charcoal friends. I haven’t forgotten about you. Grill cleaning and maintenance is just as important for charcoal grills as they are for gas, and now is the perfect time to learn the ropes. After all, year-round grilling brings great flavor to every season, but there are some particularly great grilling days coming up soon as the holidays approach.

Nothing beats gathering everyone together to enjoy a bold, delicious grilled meal. So in order to get your Weber charcoal grill ready for the holidays, follow this simple checklist to ensure it’s in perfect working order to fire up the most festive of feasts.

  • The inside of our lids cannot peel because they are coated with baked-on porcelain enamel, but occasionally you may see some small pieces of debris that look like paint. Don’t worry though, these pieces are not paint of any kind. They’re actually deposits of grease and smoke that collect during normal use. They are non-toxic and can be easily removed by brushing them away with a stainless steel brush before you start grilling. To prevent future build-up, wipe with paper towels or a mild soap-and-water solution after every grilling session. Make sure the grill is warm, not hot, when you do so.
  • Clean out the ash catcher last, and you are all done!
  • Clean All Parts Once Each Year

At the beginning and end of each grilling season, or at least once a year if you grill year-round, give your charcoal grill a thorough cleaning with hot soapy water and a stiff nylon brush or fiber scrub pad.

For complete cleaning, perform this work systematically, beginning with the surfaces up under the hood and moving down to the side walls and bottom of the cooking chamber. Make sure to thoroughly clean the drip pan.

Conclude by wiping down the outside of the grill from top to bottom, using warm water. Wipe dry to prevent rust.

How To Clean Your Charcoal Grill

How to Clean a Gas Grill

It is pretty obvious that when you grill a lot your grill gets pretty dirty. This is especially true when you use your charcoal grill as a smoker. Smoking in your grill leaves smoke residue all over the inside of your kettle. When BBQ sauce, apple cider, fats and grease all collect at the bottom of your kettle the air vents can get stuck or be very difficult to use. It is essential to clean out your grill once a year or at least once every other year depending on how much you grill and smoke.

Note: If you are feeling a little lazy, or crunched for time, check out this post on cleaning a charcoal grill with a pressure washer. It saves some time!

The last step in the disassembly of your grill is to simply unscrew the kettle from the sides of the workstation.

If you’ve ever worked with oven cleaner before you’ll know that it not only burns your skin and smells awful but it can also do some damage to your lawn. In a post last year, I said I was a clean freak when it comes to my grill. But sometimes I get busy and/or lazy and I let my Weber Summit 450 go too long between cleanings. I know its starting to get bad when I have a hard time lighting the grill because the ignitors are clogged with debris. I know its getting even worse when the burners are burning unevenly and with yellow flames because some of the burner holes are clogged. How To Clean Genesis Ii Burners

Burner tubes are the engine of any gas grill, and just like the engine of your car its important to take care of them to make sure that your grill works well and is safe to use.

When we launched our line of Genesis II and Genesis II LX models we introduced a brand new burner design that was a bit of departure from the design used on all of our other models going back to the first Genesis grill made in 1985.The older burner tube design featured tubular shaped burners with portholes that were flush with the surface of the burner. Some models featured crossover ignition technology, which was a setup with a small crossover tube that linked the burners together. Other models did not come with the crossover tube, but aside from that the burners on all models were more or less the same.

The new Genesis II and Genesis II LX burners are rectangular in shape. To help promote an even flame pattern, they are tapered, meaning that the end of the burner at the front of the grill is a bit larger than the end of the burner at the back of the grill. They also have portholes that are raised up along the upper surface of each burner to help reduce the chances of them getting clogged.

Even though the new burner design is meant to keep the burners from getting clogged its still important to make sure that youre properly maintaining them.

There are two main areas of the burners that are important to keep clean to provide the most even heat possible and to help them last a long time.
