I buy my cedar grilling planks on Amazon, and this one comes as a 12-pack. Its very important to prepare the planks.
We recently had a minor emergency situation while making cedar plank salmon. I didnt listen to my own instructions when soaking the planks, and they started on FIRE while cooking on our BGE. Mike was there for the rescue operation, and was able to get the fire out before the salmon was ruined. WHEW. My guy really is a super hero!
Moral of the story. Make sure you soak the planks for AT LEAST 3-4 hours, and dont let them stick together during that time. Lesson learned!

Can You Reuse A Cedar Plank
Yes, but it will have a less intense flavor output as some of the woods natural oils get used up from the previous cooking, making it drier. However, this can be partially remedied by lightly oiling the surface before soaking again.
I tend to discard the planks after use because the salmon skin tends to stick to the board and its easier and affordable to buy new ones. Although if the plank is still in good shape after the first use, you can wash and dry it for later. I have also used the plank again but by itself. I place it on the side of the grill to add cedar flavor to other foods.

lt’s very important to soak your cedar planks prior to cooking your salmon. Soaking it will cause the plank to smolder and create smoke. The salmon becomes slightly smokey from the cedar plank. Also the plank prevents the salmon from sticking to the grill and is easy to clean up.

How Do I Cook Cedar Plank Fish
How to Perfectly Grill Fish on a Cedar Plank Cook only the freshest fish. With salmon, make sure its wild, not farm-raised. Use an untreated, cooking-specific cedar plank. The wood should be about 12 by 6 inches. Cook over direct medium heat. Brush the salmon with extra-virgin olive oil. Place the wet plank over the fire and close the lid. Remove the fish carefully.
How To Cook Salmon On A Cedar Plank:
This cooking method is so simple. Just follow these important steps:
- Soak the plank for at least 30-minutes and up to 2 hours
- Pat the plank dry
- Season the fish with olive oil and place skin side down on the plank
- Season the top of the fish with your seasoning of choice. We use our own homemade Potlatch Seasoning.
- Grill for about 20 minutes for a large piece of salmonand 12-15 for a smaller fillet

Can You Reuse Cedar Planks
Yes! Cedar planks can be reused up until they become too charred, cracked or no longer easy to clean. Simply scrub off the fish and clean with hot water , then allow to dry completely. Store in a clean kitchen cabinet until ready to re-soak and re-use.
Keep in mind the board will absorb the flavors of whatever was cooked on it. In other words, I only use my salmon cedar planks for salmon!
How To Make Cedar Plank Salmon Grilled With Lemons And Onions
Ready to make this cedar plank salmon recipe? Heres everything you need to do, step by step.
- First, soak the cedar planks in water, or your liquid of choice. Planks should soak for at least two hours.
- Next, you need to marinate the salmon.
- Lay the salmon in the bottom of a shallow glass pan.
- Sprinkle both sides of the salmon with dill and ground pepper. No need for salt since there is plenty in the marinade.
- In a small bowl, mix sugar, chicken bouillon, avocado oil, soy sauce, green onions, and garlic. Pour over the fish.
- Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate. Marinate for one hour, turning the fish halfway through.
- After one hour, preheat the grill to medium heat. Then drain and discard the marinade from the salmon.
- Place the fish in the center of each plank . Cover each fillet with onion and lemon slices.
- Transfer the planks to the grill. Check on the salmon halfway through the cooking time, being sure you have a spray bottle on hand to keep the planks damp if needed.
- Grill until the fish is done, between 10 15 minutes, depending on the thickness of the salmon.
- Remove the planked salmon from the heat and tent with foil for 3 5 minutes.
- Top the salmon with additional fresh dill and serve on the cedar plank for an impressive presentation.
I serve cedar plank salmon with fresh grilled vegetables and roasted potatoes the entire thing can be made right on the grill!
It is truly one of my favorite ways to cook and eat salmon!

Why Cook Salmon On A Cedar Plank
So, why would you cook a piece of salmon on a Cedar plank? What are the benefits? Whats the difference between using Cedar or just using the grill or oven like you always have before?
If you have cooked salmon on a Cedar plank, you would know the following: Salmon and Cedar go together like peanut butter and jelly. It is also an easy, gentle and healthy technique for cooking fish.
Before cooking salmon on a Cedar plank, the wood should be soaked in hot water for at least 15 minutes. As the fish cooks and the plank heats up, this moisture rises out of the plank and pulls the characteristic flavors of Cedar with it.
This essentially infuses the salmon with a fresh wood flavor and allows the fish to gently steam as the plank acts as a barrier between it and the heat source. Prepare the planks as above.Preheat the grill, medium heat.
Put the juice, soy sauce, vinegar, lemon juice, oil, and honey in a small saucepan and bring to a simmer over med-high heat. Reduce to med-low and stir in the rest of the sauce ingredients, cooking until it has reduced to and coats a spoon. About 20 minutes. Remove from the heat.
Sprinkle the salmon filets with salt and pepper
Your cedar planks should be finished soaking and be ready to put on the preheated grill. Leave them for a couple of minutes over the burners, until they start to smoke, then brush them with oil and pop the salmon filets on top. Close the lid, cook for 5 minutes, then spread a little of the sauce over the salmon. Put the lid back on and cook another 5 minutes. Apply another layer of glaze to the fish. Cook another 5 minutes or until the fish is opaque throughout.Serve with the rest of the sauce, and enjoy.

Prior to grilling, soak an untreated cedar plank, submerged in water, for 2 hours. It is important to soak the cedar plank in water for at least a couple hours to prevent the wood from catching fire on the grill. Also the water from the wood will help keep the fish moist.
In a small bowl, prepare a dry rub by combining the brown sugar, salt, pepper, and lime zest. Place the salmon steak into a large dish. Using your hands, rub the prepared dry rub all over the salmon. Cover and refrigerate for 2 hours.
When ready to grill, take the salmon steak out of the refrigerator and let sit for approximately 30 minutes to come to room temperature before grilling.
