Cooking Frozen Pizza On The Grill

Using A Cast Iron Skillet

Blizzard Tip: Cook Frozen Pizza on the Grill

Im a pretty big fan of cast irons. I love the way they evenly disperse heat. They also are especially nice for cooking pizza on the grill, especially if youre into deep-dish Chicago-style pizza.

It might be hard to come across a cast iron big enough to accommodate your average frozen pizza, so you can also use a regular baking sheet or pan for similar results.

  • Preheat your grill to around 375 degrees Fahrenheit .
  • Lightly grease your cast iron or pan with olive oil.
  • If you are working with a fresh pizza and a cast iron, you should prepare your pie In the skillet before putting it on the flames. Otherwise, place the pan on the grate and then add your pizza.
  • Shut the lid and bake for 8-10 minutes .
  • Rotate it carefully then bake for another 3-5 minutes.
  • Allow to cool for 4-5 minutes then enjoy.
  • Can You Grill Frozen Pizza

Yes, you can grill frozen pizza. It will make for a crispy crust and will come out similar to a pizza cooked in a wood fired pizza oven. A simple tweak to the instructions provided on the pizza box will give you excellent results. Because no two brands of frozen pizza are the same we need to read the oven instructions and modify them for grilling.

Tip: Placing a frozen pizza directly on your grates will give you a few burnt spots on the crust. To avoid the burnt spots place some foil on your grates before you begin. To minimize the burnt spots dont let the pizza sit in one spot to long, keep the pizza moving around.

There is less chance of burning a smaller thinner pizza while trying to get it to cook through. Larger pizzas will need more time to cook leaving them exposed to the heat and flames longer.

With a thicker rising crust pizza like a DiGiorno enlist the use a pizza stone if you have one available.

Heat your grill so that your hood thermometer reads the same temperature recommended for cooking the frozen pizza in the oven or just slightly higher.

Turn down the gas to 50% or medium medium-low heat. Keep all that heat inside and have very little flame.

Place your pizza directly onto your grates. Close the lid.

Rotate the pizza ¼ turn every 3 to 4 minutes closing the lid everytime. Your cooking time on the grill will be cut by 25 to 50% off of the oven cooking instructions.

Getting The Grill Ready To Cook A Frozen Pizza On The Grill

For the grill, standard 10-inch frozen pizzas work well. Costos bigger 16-inch frozen pizzas can be more difficult to grill from frozen reducing the heat and cooking for longer periods of time can assist.

Preheat your grill for at least 15 minutes on high heat. Unwrap your pizza completely and set it immediately on the grill grates. Reduce the heat on the grill to medium . Cook, covered, for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the crust is browned. Slide the completed pizza onto a cutting board or baking sheet using a big metal spatula and a set of tongs. Allow it cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.

The resultant pizza is exceptionally crispy, with charred aromas and thoroughly browned cheese. Its so much better, even for frozen pizza, than any oven can generate, and its probably why Ill never cook frozen pizza again.

You havent lived until youve experienced the flame-licked, golden-brown cheese of a propane-grilled pie

Just 24 hours ago, I thought the whole world had gone crazy. Everywhere I seemed to look, people were talking about grilling frozen pizza and I could not figure out why. They were talking about it on Twitter and Reddit, they were and there were even several sets of instructions posted online for how to grill your frozen pizza.

Never attempted a Red Baron frozen pizza on the grill. Came out great!

Some of these posts claimed that it was a different experience, with one redditor saying that grilling a $3 Jacks frozen pizza makes it taste like a $20 pie from the Hut. Others claimed that specifically with a propane grill it was quicker than the oven because theres no preheat time. A few people even said charcoal was the way to go for an added smoky flavor.

When the charcoal grill seemed close to ready, I began preheating my oven inside and then turned on the propane grill, which, of course, heated up in an instant with no trouble at all. I then tossed one frozen pizza in each cooking apparatus and waited.

I wasnt about to give up though after all, I still had that extra pizza. I reasoned that direct heat was too intense for either grill, so I pulled out my pizza stone and a pizza tray I stole from Chuck E. Cheese during my kids third birthday party. I then cut in half the last frozen pizza and popped a side on each grill.

There are two fundamental ways of barbecuing pizza: on the mesh or a pizza stone. Both enjoy their benefits: roasting the mixture on the mesh gets you an extra smoky flavour. When you are using wood-fired ovens, you will notice that they perform better if you have a clean interior. Not to ignore the exterior, but it is more important to clean the inside of the grill.

Ensure that you have wiped oil and food residuals from the racks, the grates, cover, and the sides of the grill.

You also need to remove the ashes from the previous cooking sessions to allow more air to get inside the grill.
