After youve cooked the last burger of the season, thoroughly clean your grill before storing it for the winter. Remove the grates, burner hoods, and grease pan, and scrub them with hot, soapy water and a plastic scour pad. Do the same inside the firebox and lid. Thoroughly rinse and dry all parts before reassembling. Also, remove the battery from the igniter before storing your grill long-term so it doesnt corrode.

Even if you follow the strictest cleaning and maintenance schedule, you will have to replace some parts on your grill as it ages. The burner hoods and cooking grates in particular take a lot of abuse and arent meant to last forever. My dad replaced these parts on his 17-year-old Weber Genesis four to five times over the years.

When The Grill Is Cool

If your grill wasn’t in horrible shape when you took the cover off this season, you could skip the previous steps and start here.

  • Wash the inside of the lid and bowl with soapy water and a scrubber brush or steel wool soap pad. Rinse thoroughly.
  • Clean the cooking grate with a scraper, and then a grill brush . Apply vegetable or olive oil to the cooking grate with a rag or folded-up paper towel. You can also use beef or bacon fat. Oiling the grate helps keep food from sticking and it also prevents rust.

Clean The Cooking Grates

There are several approaches to cleaning the cooking grates:

  • Wash the grates in the kitchen sink using hot, soapy water and a scrub pad, then dry thoroughly. A short 15 minute soak helps to loosen the gunk.
  • Soak the grates overnight in a shallow wash tub or in a utility sink filled with soapy water, then scrub, rinse and dry.
  • Spray the grates with oven cleaner or a degreaser like Dawn Power Dissolver or Greased Lightning, then scrub, rinse and dry. When using oven cleaner, place the sprayed grates in a plastic garbage bag for 30 minutes to help the spray work better and to control odor. Note that repeated use of oven cleaner will cause pitting of the grate surface. This is my preferred method for cleaning cooking grates.
  • Burn off the grates over hot coals, on a gas grill, or with a propane-fired weed burner before or after a cooking session. A grill brush or a wad of crumpled aluminum foil can be used to scrub large debris from the grates. Note that burning off the grates at high temperatures will speed the breakdown of the plated finish.

To prevent the cooking grates from rusting after washing, dry them thoroughly and store them in the garage or other dry location. Grates left in the cooker out in the weather are likely to rust over time.

  • The inside of our lids cannot peel because they are coated with baked-on porcelain enamel, but occasionally you may see some small pieces of debris that look like paint. Don’t worry though, these pieces are not paint of any kind. They’re actually deposits of grease and smoke that collect during normal use. They are non-toxic and can be easily removed by brushing them away with a stainless steel brush before you start grilling. To prevent future build-up, wipe with paper towels or a mild soap-and-water solution after every grilling session. Make sure the grill is warm, not hot, when you do so.

After this, a tool that can do the cleaning is a stainless steel bristle brush. You can scrub excess debris using this brush.

Our steps to prepare your weber BBQ for the cold months ahead

Summer over? Whilst we advocate grilling all year round whatever the weather we understand that with the shorter days and cooler weather many people pack their grills away for the winter.

Garden pests like mice have been known to take up residence inside an unused BBQ, the lid provides plenty of shelter and leftover bits of food make your Weber an even greater prospect. Likewise mould feeds on organic matter so will quickly build up on leftover food, fat and cooking residue. If you’re not grilling often or packing away then we think it’s very important to leave your BBQ clean for the winter season.

Caring for a Weber Gas BBQ

Make sure your BBQ is totally cool – take a Weber T-brush and a plastic weber scraper to scrub the inside of your lid and remove built up carbon.

Then brush the grates clean with your T-brush to get rid of all the debris from this process and any build up from your last barbecue.

Lightly scrape/brush clean the Flavorizer Bars® and Heat Deflectors until these are also free from cooking debris/residue.

Do the same thing with the burner tubes but be very careful to avoid damage – brush across and not down the length of the burners, avoid the ignition electrodes completely. If any of the holes are blocked and you can’t brush the debris free using a brush then then try using a pin or needle to do so .

Step 2: Wait for the BBQ to cool down and scrub the grates with a metal spatula. Angle the brush in every direction to make sure you reach every angle.

Step 3: Once in a couple of uses, you can deep clean the BBQ grills using hot soapy water. Remove the BBQ grates and place them in a container filled with hot water and soap. How to clean stainless steel grates?

Stainless steel grates are protected from corrosion but can also easily become discoloured and damaged. However, they are relatively easy to clean.

The best way to clean this type of grate is to do so after every BBQ use while the grill is still hot. Use a mixture of soap and water and a soft cloth or a brass grill brush to remove the built-up debris from the grate.

Stainless steel grates can get scratched easy. So using metal or steel wool brushes for cleaning is a big no. Avoid using harsh cleaning detergents and stainless steel polishers since they can discolour the surface of the grates.
