Its a simple process, really.

How Cr Tests Kamado Grills

We started by assessing the cooking performance of each kamado. Could it get thin-crust pizza hot enough to crisp the crust without burning the toppings? Next, we used pork shoulder to see whether the grill could cook low and slow for long stretches, all while maintaining a consistent temperature.

Every kamado grill we tested excels in our cooking tests, but they differ significantly in two key areas: convenience and cleaning. The best kamados not only cook well but also make it easy to build a hot fire or dial down the temperature for ribs or brisket. They’re also easy to clean. Many have ash catchers, or trays, while others need to be disassembled for a thorough cleaning.

If you’re curious about kamados, our grill buying guide is a great place to learn a little more about the landscape. CR members can also access our ratings of gas, charcoal, and kamado grills.

CR members can read on for our in-depth test results for the Big Green Egg.

And regardless of which kamado grill you use, there are certain tips that will help ensure great results. Below, we’ve highlighted five of the foods that we think are best on a kamado and provided expert tips for preparing each.

Blaze Kamado Explosive Durability Test

In this video, we put the Blaze cast aluminum kamado through the ultimate durability test to see how it stacks up against its ceramic competitors. We first see how each type of kamado can handle a shot from a .460 Magnum, then we pack 2 pounds of the explosive substance known as Tannerite into both grills to well blow them up! The result is a sky-high explosion you dont want to miss.

History Of The Kamado

Big Green Egg

Early clay ovens appeared in China about 3,000 years ago. Around 300 BC, this technology was exported to Japan, and the ceramic ovens were dubbed kamados, or “stoves.”

How did the kamado come to the States? After World War II, thousands of Westerners stationed in Japan saw these wonderful cookers for the first time. Returning home, many brought kamados back, and some even started importing and selling them. One such entrepreneur was Ed Fisher, who sensed there might be an interest in these ceramic charcoal burners back in the USA. In 1974, he opened a store in Atlanta, and the Big Green Egg was born. Big Green Egg is now the most popular brand of kamado in the world, with legions of devotees who affectionately call themselves Eggheads.

But the Big Green Egg isn’t the only kamado out there. You now have a wide range of choices in all different sizes, shapes, and colors.

Kamettle Kettlelado The Weber Summit Charcoal Grill

The Weber Summit Charcoal Grill is a radical departure from George Stephen’s original Weber Kettle. It’s Weber’s first major upgrade to the Kettle in decades. Sure, the prices are in line with Summit gas grills and premium-quality kamados on carts, but they’re a big leap up from the Kettles we know and love. It’s true that a regular classic Weber Kettle can grill and smoke, but the new Summits are just plain bigger and better in every way. You get more capacity, ease of use, and more versatility. It actually is an excellent dedicated charcoal smoker by design, and the adjustable coal grate that burns directly under the cook surface for better searing also makes the Summit an even better grill than the classic Weber Kettles.

Features Face To Face

For the purposes of comparing the two brands, weve chosen two grills of a similar size and with similar functions, in this case, the Big Green Egg Large and Kamado Joe Classic III.

Well be comparing their warranty, build quality, the accessories they come with, and the customer support and community engagement associated with each brand.

Big Green Egg Gift Buying Guide | FOGO Charcoal

Lets explore a few traits that set this grill apart from the pack.

Simple to Start

The BGE attains an ideal cooking temperature and is ready for use in a few minutes. Easy Cleanup

The BGE comprises a sturdy cooking grid made of professional-grade stainless steel, a sophisticated green exterior with a lifetime eye-catching glaze that wipes down easily without a chemical cleaner. Inside, residual heat burns away any build-up of grease, as is the case with self-cleaning ovens. Moreover, theres a minimal build-up of ash.

Big Green Egg Vs Kamado Joe Vs Primo Grills

Buy XXL Big Green Egg Grill

November 25, 2020 by Shrey

When you want something to cook within your backyard, then the Big Green Egg, Kamado Joe, and Primo grills should be the first on your list as they are the best at cooking anything.

Ordinary grills can be versatile, but there is a limit to that versatility. On the other hand, Kamado grills are perhaps the most versatile cookware anywhere as you can cook any recipe inside them.

The Kamado style of cooking, invented in China thousands of years ago was not popular until recently. So companies have been developing many versions of the grill for the public.

The version that we get now is ceramic, compared to the traditional and original models made out of clay. However, they still perform with the same concept.

This style of cooking was for baking, so at first, they were called ovens. However, as time passed, we have developed models that make them great for cooking as grills.

There are a lot of companies that produce Kamado grills. If you mention the word Kamado, the brand Big Green Egg is almost always associated with it as they have great Kamado grills.

Kamado Joe is one of the tight competitors that Big Green Egg has. They have developed the same standard that BGE applies to their products, plus more when it comes to features.

Primo is a lesser-known brand than the two brands, but it deserves to be in line with these great brands. They make grills that have exceptional designs that serve a lot of purposes.

We arent here to judge the cultural phenomenon that has formed around the Big Green Egg since its 1970s debut. Lets just say that this ceramic beast of a charcoal grill and smoker has hatched numerous copycat cookers and die-hard devotees who call themselves Eggheads.

We can, however, evaluate its performance and help you answer the question: Does anyone really need to drop $1,000 on the Big Green Egg? Especially when competitive kamado grills can be had for as little as $300, not to mention that some great gas grillsas well as the top-rated charcoal grills from our testsstart around $100.

But the Big Green Egg was never trying to supplant gas and charcoal grills and, frankly, its design has little in common with traditional grills.

Rather than adjusting gas burners or arranging charcoal briquettes as you would in a conventional charcoal grill to concentrate heat, you fill a kamado grill’s lower hemisphere to capacity with lump hardwood charcoal. Once the coals are going, the design starts to make sense: Cast-ceramic walls an inch thick and a heavy lid with a heatproof gasket team up to trap heat. That allows you to use the dampers to precisely control the temperature.

Latest From The Big Green Egg Company

In January of 2022, Big Green Egg announced that it would now be a purpose-driven company. To speak plainly, the company now promised to put a portion of their profits towards child-focused charities in the more than 50 countries in which their product is sold. Personally, I commend the effort to make the world a better place. You can read the full press release on their website.

Red Is The New Green: Kamado Joe Classic Ii 18

The Kamado Joe Classic II 18″ is an elegant, well-crafted ceramic cooker that presents strong competition to other 18-inch models in the premium-priced market. This company pays attention to detail and offers upgrades, like top-quality 304 stainless steel cooking grates, as standard features. In 2014, Kamado Joe introduced a unique multilevel grate and heat-deflection system called “Divide and Conquer,” which comes standard with this model at no extra charge. The system is a grouping of multilevel racks and deflectors that relieves some of the pain and cost of creating different cooking zones in a round kamado. Kamado Joe is always on the move, innovating and offering unique features not found on other kamados.

Find The Best Big Green Eggs At A Low Price

Even to novice barbeque enthusiasts, some grills have the advantage of being universally recognizable. This is particularly true for the kamado or iconic ceramic style grill, popularly referred to as the Big Green Egg. It garnered attention as the first of its kind in the US.

While only a handful of products that first hit the market have the luxury of becoming impressively synonymous with their brands, the Big Green Egg remains known to date.

It’s been about 50 years since its penetration into the grilling world, but the BGE remains one of the most durable and easily accessible kamado grills in the market.

A myriad of grills appeals to seasoned backyard veterans or novices, but the Big Green Egg is an incredible choice for both.
