When To Flip Your Ribs On The Grill
If youre a new grilling enthusiast, youve probably wondered when you should flip your ribs on the grill.
Its a common question, and unfortunately, as weve discussed, theres no single answer.
The type of ribs youre cooking, as well as the method of cooking will impact the number of flips necessary.
For example, if youre using direct heat to cook your ribs, you will need to flip them less frequently.
Not everyone likes to stand by the grill the whole time, but its a necessary sacrifice to make for perfectly cooked ribs.
Next, well cover some of the most common types of ribs out there, and discuss how often you should flip them.
What Temperature Do You Cook Ribs On A Traeger
A temperature between 225 to 250 degrees is best for cooking ribs on a Traeger grill. Though the cooking times vary by the type of ribs to reach an ideal temperature between 190 to 205-degrees.
For pre-cook and sauced ribs, you want to target the low temperatures around 225-degrees for 30 to 45 minutes. You want to give the ribs enough time to warm through to the bone, while also caramelizing the sauce without burning it
For pre-cooked ribs that have a seasoning rub, you want to target a temperature around 225 degrees. 25 to 40 minutes should be sufficient to warm them through while replicating the exterior of a classic Memphis Dry.
You could also take the same pre-cooked ribs and smoke them for 30 minutes at 225 degrees, mopping them with a brown sugar and vinegar sauce to finish them in Lexington-style barbecue.
When smoking raw ribs on a Traeger, you want to hold to 225 degrees for 3 hours to infuse the meat with a smoky flavor. Then you can wrap the ribs in heavy-duty aluminum foil for 2 hours at 250-degrees to finish them as the touch of collagen in the ribs renders them into succulent, juicy gelatin.
As the internal temperature in the thickest part of the rib meat approaches 180-degrees, you want to open up the foil and sauce them liberally. Turn the heat down to 225-degrees to let the sauce slowly caramelize for another 45 minutes to an hour or until the rib meat reaches 200-degrees.
Braising Is The Key To Tender Ribs
The braising also allows you to separate the natural meat juices from the fat that is rendered out in the oven. You can then save this pork stock to mix 1/2 and 1/2 with your favourite BBQ Sauce to mop on the ribs as they reheat and get a little char on them.
Braised then grilled!
This works incredibly well to keep the ribs from drying out as they are reheating. I used my latest recipe forSmoky Spice Honey BBQ Sauceon the ribs and they were incredibly delicious but Id also recommend ourMaple Chipotle BBQ Saucetoo.
I like to use St. Louis style side ribs for this recipe because they are much meatier but you can use baby back ribs too, just note the adjustment in oven time.

One last tip is to always cook your ribs in half racks. I always do this because they are much easier to handle on the grill.
I find as they get toward the end of the grilling time a full rack is far more likely to break apart. Turning them multiple times in the glazing process is required and half racks are easier to handle

How Do You Smoke Costco Ribs On A Traeger Grill
Costco sells pre-cooked, pre-sauced, and raw ribs. All of which can be smoked on a Traeger wood pellet grill, though the cooking time can vary.
A temperature range of 225 to 250 degrees is ideal. Though you will want a shorter cooking time for pre-cooked and sauced ribs of half an hour or so to caramelize the sauce and warm them through.
Raw ribs need a much longer smoking time of 3 hours at 225 to 250. Then two more hours wrapped in heavy-duty aluminum foil, and then another hour with the foil open and your preferred sauce applied to let it caramelize onto the rib meat.
Its important to note that the cooking time for ribs on a Traeger can vary depending on the type of ribs and even the degree of doneness of the pre-cooked ribs. The goal is to cook them until the meat in the thickest part of the ribs reaches an internal temperature of 190 to 205-degrees.
Beef Ribs Or Pork Ribs
When it comes to ribs, your options aren’t just limited to beef and pork, but also to the various rib cuts for each animal. Deciding between precooked beef and pork ribs, as well as cut, may ultimately come down to taste preference and whether you’re able to find your preferred cut of ribs precooked at your grocery store or butcher shop.

You need to take extra care when preparing ribs that are labeled pre smoked instead of just pre cooked.
First of all, they shouldnt need 2 hours on the heat. If theyve been properly smoked already, the meat should be tender enough to come off the bone easily.
You might not even need to fire up the smoker to reheat them. 10 to 15 minutes under the broiler should be enough to warm them up. If you do want to use the grill, build a hot fire and heat the ribs for 5-7 minutes per side.

If you are using wood chips, you will probably have to add more wood every hour. This is particularly important for the first 2 hours. Your ribs will be done when they become tender and the meat is loose around the bones, which can be 4 to 5 hours.
To speed up the process or to increase the tenderness of the ribs, you can pre-cook the rack. Ribs cooked on a barbecue smoker at a low temperature for several hours will be very tender. However, ribs cooked on a grill, especially a gas grill, will not be as tender, even when cooked indirectly. You can precook by either boiling the ribs for about 30 minutes or by placing them in a slow cooker. Once you are ready to grill, season the ribs and cook them indirectly until done. - Take the pork ribs out of their package and blot them dry using a paper towel. Spray or grease the aluminum pan with non stick frying spray. In a pan, brown the ribs. Remove the silver skin from the ribs backside.
- Season the back of the ribs with some of the pork rubs spice. Theres a reason its called rub. As a consequence, rub and push it in as much as you can. Note: If you want to make the rib rack simpler to manage on the grill, split it in half.
- Season the other side of the ribs as well. The rule of thumb for rubbing seasoning is to apply only what naturally clings to the ribs. Anything that comes off after rubbing it in should be discarded. Fill the pan halfway with apple juice. Refrigerate the pan, covered with aluminum foil, until ready to grill.
