What Temperature Do You Make Grilled Cheese

How To Cook Grilled Cheese In The Oven

How to make grilled cheese sandwiches
  • 1Preheat your oven to 450 °F with the top rack in place. Check that one of the racks inside your oven is in the top position so your grilled cheese cooks thoroughly. Turn the oven on to 450 °F and let it heat completely while you prepare your sandwiches. Once the oven is up to temperature, you can cook your sandwiches.XResearch source
  • You can also use a toaster oven if you dont want to heat up your regular oven.
  • 2Butter your slices of bread on 1 side. Choose your favorite type of bread to use for your sandwich. Use 2 slices of the bread and spread room temperature butter on 1 side of each slice. Spread the butter to the edges of the slice to help get even browning and prevent them from burning.XResearch source
  • Soften the butter if you dont have any at room temperature so you dont rip pieces off of your bread.
  • Alternatively, you can spread mayonnaise on your bread instead of butter.
  • 3Lay your slices of bread on a baking sheet butter-side down. Use a rimmed baking sheet large enough so you can place the slices of bread about 1 inch apart. Lay the slices of bread so the buttered sides are face down on the tray so they can get crispy.XResearch source
  • You can also use a flat baking sheet if you dont have one with a rim, but the butter could drip into your oven as it melts.
  • Tip: Cover the baking sheet in aluminum foil so you dont have to clean it afterward. Remove the aluminum foil when it cools off and throw it away.

    What Pan To Use

I prefer to use my cast iron skillet as it maintains a consistent heat better and gives a superior crispy surface. A nonstick skillet works well and prevents sticking if using sweeter types of bread. In either case, you want to use very moderate heat for making the sandwiches, about medium-low or low if the bread is toasting too quickly.

The Best Bread For Grilled Cheese

Have you ever gone to the store thinking, I need to get bread specifically for making grilled cheese sandwiches? I sure havent! Grilled cheese sandwiches happen in my house not because of meal planning, but lack of it. Thats whats so great about them!

Sliced sandwich bread is classic. Crusty artisanal bread is great, too. Bread that has a very open, lacy interior lets too much cheese ooze through, and bread thats exceptionally dense makes for a leaden sandwich. Bread thats neither dense nor airy is what you want.

    Try these:

    • Brioche loaves

Now, that we have the type of bread figured out, lets talk about the best slice for the job. The thicker the bread slices, the longer it will take for the cheese to melt. And the bread will wind up detracting from the cheese, which is not the point!

Bread sliced over half an inch thick will impede optimal cheese melting. For perfect grilled cheese every time opt for slices between 1/4-inch and 1/2-inch thick.

Have I made grilled cheese on hot dog buns before? Yes. Are they ideal? No, far from it. But you get the picture. Sometimes a sandwich isnt a work of art. Its just food. Do what works for you!

    How Much Cheese Is Enough

This is a very personal issue. Its possible to overdo it, but no one wants a skimpy grilled cheese, either. Theres plenty of space in the middle ground.

Two ounces of cheese per sandwich is a good rule of thumb, but a better rule of thumb is to eyeball it. Three ounces gives you a more decadent grilled cheese. Its your call!

Either way, grate as much cheese as you need to pile loosely on both slices of bread. A good, fluffy handful should do it.

    What Defines A Grilled Cheese

A grilled cheese sandwich is assembled by creating a cheese filling, often cheddar, or American, between two slices of bread, and is then heated until the bread browns and the cheese melts. A layer of butter or mayonnaise is sometimes added to the outside of the bread for additional flavor and texture.

    Tips And Tricks For Upgrading

    Epic Breakfast Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Tip 1: One concern that Ive heard about is that the air fryer makes the top piece of bread fly off because of the intense air circulation that goes on inside the appliance. To avoid this, you can simply stab the grilled cheese with a tooth-pic and voila problem solved!

Tip 2: Dont use any metal utensils to flip your grilled cheese. The nonstick is super important for the air fryer basket so you dont want to use anything that might damage it.

Tip 3: Over the last 10 years, Ive probably shared thousands of ways to upgrade a grilled cheese sandwich. Some of my most basic easy additions include adding bacon, avocado, spicy mayo, a fried egg, pickles, and the like.

Ways To Dress Up Your Grilled Cheese

I am no purist, and I put all kinds of stuff on my grilled cheese. Just dont overstuff it, or all the goodies will slip out. What goodies, you say? Some suggestions:

  • Alison Bickel
  • Close the sandwich and finish grilling:

Close the sandwich and continue grilling, flipping the sandwich with a turner as needed, until both sides are golden brown, another 2-3 minutes per side.

Usually, the second side takes less time than the first. Press down on the sandwich gently but firmly with your turner to compact it a little, but dont smoosh it. You may need to turn the heat down to medium-low to keep the bread from charring.

Peek in the sandwich to see if the cheese is fully melted. If the bread is grilled to your liking but the cheese needs more time, turn the heat down and grill it a few minutes longer.

    Alison Bickel

  • Serve the sandwich:

Cut the sandwich the way you like best and let it cool a minute or so before eating, unless you like burning your mouth on molten cheese. Serve immediately.

Cheese: Grated Or Sliced For A Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Grated cheese melts more evenly, plus it allows more even bread coverage. That means you can pack more cheese on every bite! And if you are blending a few cheeses, you can mix grated cheeses together better.

Dont feel like messing around with a cheese grater? Fine, skip it. Youll still wind up with a grilled cheese sandwich. But youll miss out on those little shreds that slip out of the sandwich and slowly crisp up in the pan. You know what Im talking aboutthe cheese crispies. I love those! Do you?

The Secret Ingredient For The Best Grilled Cheese

My cheesemonger friend got me onto using mayonnaise instead of butter.

Its always spreadable, it gives you a fabulous golden-brown crust thats not as apt to burn as butter, and it offers just a little zip.

My favorite brands are Hellmanns/Best Foods and Dukes. I havent tried Miracle Whip , but I figure its too sweet to work well here. You can also make your own mayoits actually just as easy as making a grilled cheese!

Give mayonnaise a shot! Use the same amount as you would butter.

If you are 100 percent Team Butter, I understand. You can either butter the bread directly or melt a pat of butter in the pan. I prefer to butter the bread directly, but lets say your butter is straight from the fridge and rock-hard. In that case, melt it in the pan.

One of my colleagues here at Simply Recipes swears by this approach and uses it in his Italian Grilled Cheese Sandwiches.

How Can I Make My Grilled Cheese Better

  • When making a sandwich, you should mix a little mayo into the butter on the outside. This should prevent it from burning up.
  • Once your sandwich is finished cooking, spread oad in the oven, open-faced, then finish in a skillet
  • Have shredded your cheese
  • Keep the ingredients in mind and play around

    Melted Butter Is A Must

The key to an evenly-greased and toasted bread is to brush the top and bottom of the sandwich with melted butter. You can microwave the butter and easily brush the liquid on each slice. This allows you to control how much of the fat is applied so it doesnt get too soggy.

Do this step right before adding to the preheated pan. If you have salted butter, that would enhance the flavor further. The milk solids in the butter transform into nutty, deep golden brown hues when gently heated and this elevates the taste and texture.

Instead of dropping a pat of butter into a hot skillet, butter the bread for more flavor and even browning. Generously spread one side of each bread slice with softened salted butter. Or, instead of butter, spread one side of each bread slice with mayonnaise. It will give your sandwich a slight tang and help it brown beautifully.

Should You Cook Grilled Cheese On Low Heat

Grilling the cheese over medium heat for 10 to 15 minutes or longer results in best results. It is important to ensure the bread and the cheese are evenly brownned as well as to allow them to melt completely while cooking grilled cheese for as long as possible. Knowing how long to cook grilled cheese to insure proper results is crucial.

How Do You Toast A Sandwich Like Subway In The Oven

Placing the sandwiches on a large baking sheet and baking them under the broiler for two or three minutes so that theyre not burning is a good idea. Its a good idea for your kids not to do this step, but to do it yourself instead. If you want to cook at high temperatures in the oven, it is easy because it heats your food to the point of getting extremely hot.
