Performance: Simple And Effective
This Webers plated steel cooking grate is hinged so that its easier to load charcoal, even while cooking, onto the heavy-gauge steel grate below. Like many, I eschew lighter fluid, so for easy fire-starting, I opted to use Webers Rapidfire Chimney Starterjust one of several accessories you can purchase for this grill . With this method, the coals take about 10 minutes to light and another 10 for the grill to get hot.
No matter what you slap on it, the Weber can cook ithot and fast or low and slow. Ive thrown pork, burgers, steaks, chicken, veggies, and even some pineapple on the Weber with fabulous results. Some foods call for direct heat right over the coals, but you can also position the fuel to the side to cook indirectly, something youll want to do if you are grilling a whole chicken or playing around with a beer can recipe. You can even use the Weber to slowly smoke more traditional barbecue by adding a little wood to the fire.
Maintaining a consistent temperature is crucial, and the Weber does this better than any other in its price range.
Weber Models That Are Made And Assembled Out Of The Usa
The spirit series and the genesis two series are made and assembled in Taiwan and China. Webers company holds its root in America. The engineers and rigorously designs all their products in their home country. All the products, including the electric grills, are subjected to torture testing. This process helps to stimulate by increasing their warranty and use.
No matter where the products are manufactured, Weber can confidently provide the customer with all kinds of customer satisfaction after using their product.

Ease Of Cleaning: Hot And Fast
A clean grill is essential to flavor, and cleaning the Weber is a fairly simple affair thanks to the ash catcher. Even though it is solidly attached, the catcher pops off with ease, and its deep, bowl-like shape allows you to seamlessly pour the ashes into the trash without much spilling after they have cooled. I managed to get it all in the can every timesomething I cant say about the original plate-style catcher, with which I probably lost an average of about 40 percent of the ashes to the wind.
To clean the grates, build a fire, heat up the grill, and then take a bristle-free wire brush and scrape. Every few cooks, I like to use a Shop-Vac to remove any greasy ashes stuck in the bottom of the grill. As a preventative, youll want to oil the meats and veggies before they go on to prevent sticking and extra scraping.
Once you factor in price, performance, and design, the Weber is the heavy hitter in the arena of charcoal grills.

The Issue With The Outsourcing
Weber has chosen to outsource their goods for manufacturing purposes for some of these third-world countries due to taxation issues. Large conglomerates tend to pay lower taxes abroad other than in the USA. It lets companies like Weber pay lower taxes.
Outsourcing allows the acquisition of labor at minimum cost. With this, the manufacturing cost of this overseas country is somewhat low. With the relaxed costing and taxation system Weber can save a lot of money.
Apart from that, outsourcing allows the home-built company to focus on its goal. Weber has more straightforward goal developmental plans with this ideology as they dont have to look for any manufacturing issues. They can hire other outside companies to do the heavy lifting on behalf of them.
All these factors can come together and provide the company to build customer retainability with affordable products by increasing the sales and cost of the product enabling their higher profit margin.
Best Charcoal Holder: Weber Char
Weber Char-Baskets is a pair of sturdy containers for your grill’s charcoal or wood chunks. These briquet baskets are made from aluminum steel and make cooking both easywho doesn’t want thatand safe. For direct heat, simply put the two baskets in the center of your kettle grill, and for indirect heat, move them to the sides. They’re handy, convenient, and affordablea winning combo.
Probably the worst thing about grilling on charcoal is getting the fire started. Everyones got a favorite method, possibly involving newspaper, paraffin, or kindling, but thats not particularly reliable, especially when its windy. While starter fluid can make fire starting a little more reliable, it can also leave a nasty flavor behind.
This fire starter solves all the lighting problems, and it works quickly, so you dont have to wait as long to start cooking. Thanks to the innovative elbow that opens on the side of the chimney, this draws in more air and gets the fire going in just a few minutes with no starter fluid needed. The hole is also designed to hold the clip-on BBQ Dragon Fan for even faster, more consistent burning.
The side hole lets you add newspapers or commercial fire starters to the chimney. Additionally, you can light the coals without trying to lift the chimney to get underneath.

It’s really a shame see good names being bought out and stripped of everything they once stood for.

Weber Grills Made Overseas
On the other hand, the Spirit and Genesis II lines are manufactured in either China or Taiwan.
If buying American-made products is important to you, steer clear of the units in these lineups. If you decide to buy one anyway, be aware that the Genesis line comes with a few extra featuresand a price tag to match.
If you arent sure whether the grill youve purchased was made in the US, check the labeling. The ones that are manufactured at the Huntley facility still carry the Made in the USA stamp. However, most of them include the caveat that some of the components are made in other countries. If theres no stamp, then the grill was made in China.

How We Picked The Best Gas Grill
We had three firm criteria that our main contenders had to meet:
Finally, we restricted our search to grills that burn propane from refillable tanks, the most common fuel by far, but you should note that most grills can also run on natural gasthough converting to natural gas isnt cheap or simple.1
We didnt fret much over two other factors that grill-makers spend a lot of time talking about: total Btu count and the grates material. First, the total Btu count on three-burner grills tends to vary between 30,000 and 40,000, and the industry is making a strong push toward more is better. But our research and reporting convinced us that at least as important as the total output was whether those Btus were applied efficiently, steadily, and evenly across the grates. We decided to reserve judgment until our tests.
We knew we would be looking at intangibles, too, such as how well the grills were packed, if the instructions were clear, and if assembly was reasonably straightforward. And, of course, we would consider the biggest intangible of all: the grills ability to perform in our tests.
But those judgments would have to wait until we got our hands on the contenders. So after weeks of research, reporting, and discussion, we settled on four gas grills to test in our main $400 to $700 category, and two grills around the $200 mark to test as budget options.
Competition: A Crowded Field

Sure, there are many options on the market. But once you factor in price, performance, and design, the Weber is the heavy hitter in the arena of charcoal grills. A high-end ceramic kamado grill, while a superior cooker thanks to its insulation, will run you $800 minimum. Barrel-style charcoal grills, while larger, can be more difficult to manage and harder to clean. There are cheaper versions of the kettle out there, but the Webers quality construction makes it a valuable purchase that should last you a long time.
Yes, buy it.
What are you waiting for? If you do not have a grill, the Weber Original Kettle Premium 22 Charcoal Grill is the place to start. For those new to cooking outdoors, the Weber makes it easy to learn to grill over a flame youll look like an old hand in no time. But even if you have a gas grill or a pellet smoker , sometimes the charcoal option is simply superior.

Verdict: Are Weber Grills Made In The Usa
Although Weber is headquartered in the U.S. and has their primary manufacturing facilities in Palatine and Huntley, Illinois, they can no longer claim to be made in the USA for many of their products because they have some components of their grills that are imported.
They had a fallout in 2012 when Weber had a class action lawsuit brought against them about their Made in the USA stamp on all of their products. All of their engineering and grill assembly is done in their Illinois facilities, but since a small percentage of their grill components are imported from other countries, many consumers felt like they were being mislead with the Made in the USA label. Weber ended up settling on the case in order to avoid further litigation costs on both sides.
Unfortunately, it seems like Weber still cannot say that their grills are made in the USA. And even for the ones that are assembled here, many have the label Made in the USA incorporating globally sourced component parts. The Genesis II is a good example of that, shown here .
Many of their newer models also seem to be made in China, like the popular Spirit II grill, shown here .
Unfortunately, we couldnt find any Weber grills that dont have globally sourced components or assembly.
Why You Should Trust Us
Before opening the valve on a single propane tank, we spoke with more than a dozen experts.
Joe Salvaggio of Big Apple BBQ spent two hours explaining the fundamentals of gas-grill design, function, materials, and maintenance. Joe and his brother Tony have run Big Apple BBQ, one of the New York regions leading grill shops, for over 30 years. The store carries grills from multiple manufacturers, ranging from $400 backyard portables to five-figure custom built-ins. Because Salvaggio is an independent retailer, he was able to speak freely about what he saw as the relative strengths and weaknesses of various designs.
At the 2017 Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Expo, we interviewed senior product managers from almost every major grill-maker in attendance, including all the brands that wound up featured in our test: Weber, Broil King, and Napoleon. We spoke with multiple makers of high-end grills, too, as they predominate at HPBE. Though we wouldnt be testing their grills, we felt that knowing what goes into making a $4,000 grill helped us evaluate the less expensive grills in our test.
