The Camp Chef Woodwind Wifi Review

I am so thrilled to be able to announce the launch of the brand new Camp Chef Woodwind WiFi one of my favorite pellet smokers is now even better.

I can tell you that I’ve been using this thing for the last few weeks and you can color me impressed!

What’s so great about WiFi capability?

This means you can connect the unit to your home wifi via a few easy steps and voila! it can then be controlled via an app on your smartphone or tablet from virtually anywhere in the world.

Need to run to the store, do errands, go to work, get a good night sleep even and still be able to monitor and/or control the temperature of your smoker and up to 4yes four pieces of meat, now you can!

I guess you can tell that I’m pretty excited about this machine

Let me just back up and tell you about my experience:

It arrived well packaged like all of the stuff I receive from Camp Chef

I had to install the following:

  • legs
  • front lid handle
  • chimney

I was able to install all of these components in about an hour by myself although I did ask for help when it came time to sit the unit up on its legs after installation.

Keep in mind that I will be slower than most since I am stopping every little bit to take pictures of the process.

Also, this did not include installing the propane fueled sidekick which mounts to the right side of the unit.

If your budget isnt flexible enough for the Woodwind, you can always go with the SmokePro SG.

It gives you similar features at a more affordable price. You can still adjust the smoke settings however, there are only 2 meat probes included.

You can also add the same features, such as the Sidekick and Searbox.

Camp Chef Woodwind Ownership Experience

Pellet smokers are largely maintenance-free, other than routine cleaning. Butthere are some complex components that have been known to fail, and there aresome parts that need periodic replacement, like the ignitor rod. Because of this, we like to doa review of manufacturer warranties, as well as common issues that a modelmight have.

The Camp Chef Woodwind, and all Camp Chef pellet grills, hasa 3-year warranty. As well, they have a toll-free customer service number forservice issues or product support questions.

Customer Service

We called with a simple question on a Friday afternoon about2pm ET. When we called, there was an automated call tree service and we were onhold a total of only 1 minute, which is a plus. The customer service personthat answered seemed overall helpful but didnt seem super knowledgeable aboutpellet grills in general. We asked about the 25-30 degree temperaturedifference we were seeing. She asked what kind of pellets we were using and we assured her we were using a premium pellet, Cookin Pellets, which shehad never heard of. That isnt awful, but its not a great sign. In the end,her advice was to check out the large Facebook community for Camp Chef smokersand that someone there would probably be able to help. Not a great response.

Ease of Ownership

Dependability

We look to online forums as well as manufacturer FrequentlyAsked Questions in order to try and find the most common issues with a particularmodel. For the Woodwind, we found the following:

A To Z List Of The Best Bbq Wood Pellets

A pellet grill/smoker is only as good as the BBQ pellets you put into it. The type/quality of the BBQ wood pellets you use will impact temperature performance and smoke flavour. There are many pellet flavours including Apple, Hickory, Mapel, Oak and Walnut to name but a few. However, some brands are hardwood blended pellets whereas others are 100% single wood species.

In this article, I provide details on over 20 brands of BBQ wood pellets, their range of flavours, whether they are 100% single wood species or hardwood blended pellets, their typical price and where they are available. I also provide tips on how to get the best deal when buying BBQ wood pellets and how to test pellet quality. Finally, I discuss the new kid on the block, charcoal pellets and their special attributes compared to all other hardwood BBQ pellets.

Cleaning The Camp Chef Woodwind

Camp Chef have made light work of cleaning their Woodwinds with the patented Ash Kickin Cleanout system. Basically, its a little container that fits underneath the firebox so the ash falls down into it and can be easily emptied, instead of having the remove the grates and heat deflector and shop vac the ash out.

It does save a decent amount of time. But, youll still need to wipe down the cooking grates and the heat deflector plate which catches the drippings.

You can get disposable grease bucket liners to eliminate one other messy job too.

The Woodwinds also have a pellet hopper clean out door so you can empty any unused pellets easily.

Overall, theyre straightforward to clean and a little easier than average.

How Does The Camp Chef Woodwind Pellet Grill Stack Up

When it comes to all around quality and capabilities, Im not exaggerating when I say that the Camp Chef Woodwind Pellet Grill is one of the top pellet grills on the market.

There really isnt a stone left unturned in the design of these grills. Not only that, they are true set it and forget it cookers which comes in especially handy for longer BBQ smoking sessions.

You can be cooking delicious food all the while monitoring your grill and food from the convenience of a phone app with precision and accuracy.

Slide And Grill Technology

Most pellet grills operate with a convection style cooking method where a fan circulates heat and smoke from smoldering wood pellets around your grills chamber.

Camp Chef has created a feature in their grills to help recreate a direct heat method of grilling which can be useful if your goal is to make a crust on your grilled food.

All you have to do is pull a knob, and a sliding door opens to expose a portion of your grill grates to open flames. Using this setting also allows for your grill to achieve temperatures up to 650°F.

How To Clean a Pellet Grill | Camp Chef Woodwind Wifi 24 Cleaning

Back in 2018, the BBQ Guys did their first review of a Camp Chef Woodwind pellet grill the SG 24. Therefore, this grill features the first generation controller . The review clearly shows the settings and controls on the first generation SG 24 controller. Note the low and high smoke settings at 160 and 220 degrees respectively and how the temperature range increases in 25-degree increments.

While the SG 24 is going to produce excellent BBQ this review in hindsight also highlights the improvements of the second generation PID WiFi controller which has 1-10 smoke settings for any set temperature. Furthermore, the temperature can be controlled in just 5-degree increments. In 2019 the BBQ Guys did their second review of the Woodwind range on the second generation WiFi 36.

As the above review shows, the WiFi integration and App adds a significant amount of versatility and flexibility to an already feature-rich range of pellet grills. Its worth noting that the Woodwind WiFi range is currently the only pellet grills you can get with WiFi monitoring of four meat probes.

Woodwind Wifi Range 20 24 And 36

Well now look at what I refer to as the second generation of Camp Chef Woodwind pellet grills with the upgraded PID WiFi controllers. Other than the WiFi 20 both the WiFi 24 and WiFi 36 are available as stand-alone units or with the optional propane Side Kick or Sear Box. It is worth noting that the WiFi 20 is the only Woodwind pellet grill that is not compatible with the optional propane Side Kick/Sear Box.

Therefore, you have to think carefully before choosing this model, as you wont be able to add that feature at a later date. As you have probably guessed already the WiFi 20 is the smallest offering. That means it has the smallest total cooking area but also the smallest pellet hopper capacity . While not marketed as a portable pellet grill due to its low weight it can be easily moved around to different locations.

The WiFi 20 is the smallest Woodwind in the range. However, its feature-rich using the new PID WiFi controller with 4 meat probe ports: Video Campchef.com

If you are looking for the extra utility and capability the propane Side Kick or Sear Box can offer you will be looking at the larger WiFi 24 or WiFi 36. If your budget is limited you can opt for either model as a stand-alone unit and add the propane Side Kick or Sear Box at a later date.

Now, as I referenced at the start of this post there are two generations of Windwood grills, and the first generation is still on sale today. Therefore, please bear that in mind. Ive noted below covering the whole range of Woodwind grills which have and which do not have WiFi integration.

The video below from Camp Chef may sell you on the idea or you may determine its an additional expense you dont need. Hence, its why I think Camp Chef is still offering both versions of the Woodwind with and without the upgraded control panel and WiFi features.

Its important to note, WiFi and the Camp Chef connect app are not featured on the first-generation Woodwind pellet grills: Video Campchef.com

As Ive stated above, the Woodwind range has been around for a few years now and has seen upgrades along the way. Therefore, instead of referencing the grills below in size order, I wanted to discuss the first generation of Woodwind grills and then move onto the second generation with WiFi.

First-generation Woodwind grills are still available on the Camp Chef website so its worth discussing them. After all, they do cost a bit less than the latest Woodwind grills. So if you like the general construction and features of these grills but your budget is on a tight leash, they may still be worth considering.

Easy Ash Cleanout System

Camp Chef knows how irritating ash build-up is. When your pellet grill experiences too much build-up, the burn cup may struggle with lighting.

So, the only way to clean up your pellet grill is to remove the greasy racks, trays but not with the Woodwind 24. You can do all of that with just a pull of a lever.

All you need is a removable cup, and you can collect all the contents of the burn pot without messing around.

The pellet smoker is fitted with a slider rod that attaches to the flat plate below the burner pot. When the rod is pulled out, the plate moves and drops the ash into a cleanout cup.

It saved me so much time when it came to cleaning since I didnt have to remove the drip pan, heat deflector, or drip tray.

According to the Camp Chef website, they are the only pellet grills in the industry with this system.

Introduction To The Camp Chef Woodwind Pellet Grill Range

Camp Chef Woodwind WIFI 24 with Sidekick Review and Cook

With the Woodwind range its pretty clear that Camp Chef is trying to make a wood pellet grill/smoker more attractive to BBQ owners who have only previously used propane grills. With all but the most die hardwood/charcoal grill owners, wood pellets have won the war.

With pellets, you can get precise temperature control and a grill that feeds its self with fuel. With pellets, you are getting the same great flavour from cooking with wood logs, chips and charcoal. The significant difference being as the commercial above states, anybody can produce great tasting food on a pellet grill. Whereas it takes a lot of experience/time to produce great tasting BBQ on traditional wood/charcoal grills.

With hardwood BBQ wood pellets you get the great taste of cooking with wood/charcoal but with the convenience of cooking with gas/propane: Image

Now while there are very few people who would suggest a propane grill can compete with a wood pellet grill in terms of flavour. There are some aspects of a propane grill that a pellet grill generally lacks as I discuss in my gas vs pellet grill article. For instance, propane grills are great for searing meat and vegetables and they are also very convenient. With a propane grill, you turn it on and within just a couple of minutes, youre cooking.

What Can Be Improved

Overall, I was very impressed with the Woodwind.

The overall grilling experience has been a delight – however, there are a few things that I would change if I had the chance.

There seem to be a few problems with the temperature accuracy. It doesnt happen often, and it isnt a big deal however, I have noticed a slight variance with the temperature the grill is using and the one I set it to. It is still much more manageable than a charcoal grill.

A To Z List Of Pellet Grill/smoker Brands

Back in 2007 when I first become aware of pellet grills and smokers the only brand I was really aware of was Traeger. Traeger is really where this whole concept of cooking with pellets started in the 1980s. It was a slow burner but since the 2010s is really when pellet grills and smokers started to get mainstream awareness, discussed alongside gas and charcoal grills. There are now over 30 pellet grill/smoker brands that Im aware of, and the link above goes to my A to Z list of brands article.

Now, you may already be aware of a few of the other brands such as Pit Boss, Camp Chef, Z Grills and Im sure you are aware of Weber, though you may not have known they have entered the pellet grill game. However, they are now many, many more brands to look into. Some may be what are commonly referred to as Traeger clones, but many others are offering their own unique designs and features.
