Yes, and for some reason. Salmon in foil needs more time to cook because, in this case, your fish cooks over indirect infrared heat. Aluminum foil doesnt let most of the convectional heat pass through. As a result of indirect infrared cooking, your salmons sealed juices dont escape and are retained in the fillets. Salmon is more yummy and delectable when cooked in foil.
How To Grill Salmon Like A Pro
Now that youve selected the perfect cut of salmon and seasoned it, its time to heat up the grill! The best method to barbecue salmon can be broken down into a few simple steps:
Preheat your grill to medium to high temperature around 400 /205 .
Season the salmon thoroughly and oil the cooking grids. Be sure to fully preheat the grill to prevent sticking.
Put the skinless side of your salmon fillet first to get beautiful grill marks. On the other hand, if you prefer crunchy and crispy salmon skin, you can do that side first. Ensure that there is an ample amount of space between each salmon piece when placing them on the grill to make sure they are cooked evenly.
Leave your salmon alone for 5 to 6 minutes and avoid poking, touching, or flipping them just yet. Let your Rogue® XT 625 SIB work its magic!
When the salmon is about 60 percent cooked, flip it to let the other side cook. Use a stainless steel wide spatula to get underneath the fish and tongs to support it while you flip. How Do You Know When Salmon Is Done On The Grill
The best way to check whether your salmon is done on the grill is to press down on it with a fork gently. If the salmon flakes easily along the white lines of the flesh , it means your fish is done.
Another way to determine whether your salmon has finished cooking is to measure its internal temperature with the help of an instant-read thermometer. If your Thermapen registers a temperature of 145 degrees Fahrenheit, your fish has cooked to perfection.
How Do I Know Salmon Is Done
Cooked salmon will always go from a vibrant pink color to more of an opaque color when done.Use an instant-read thermometer is key! If Ive told you once, Ive told you a thousand times. It takes the guess work out of is it done or not. This is the thermometer I use, it has a probe and build in USDA doneness temperatures for every protein, including fish. If you dont have that a simple eye test will work flaking the fish with a fork or the skin will pull away from the flesh as well.
Grilled fish is cooked when it is 145°F, but remember youre food will continue to cook once youve pulled it from the grill or oven. Transfer your salmon from the grill when it reaches 125°-130°F, then let it rest for a few minutes and serve! I love to top mine with a juice of fresh lemon juice to brighten up the fish.
Whats The Difference Between Grilled And Blackened
Blackening meat simply means adding a blend of blackening seasoning to your meat before cooking it. It adds a delicious flavor to meats and even veggies or plant-based proteins like tofu! In this recipe, you have the option to grill or bake your salmon once youve added the blackening seasoning, and youll cook it skin-side down over higher heat to seal in all of the moisture and flavor.
If youre wondering about where you can find the blackening seasoning mentioned in the recipe, its usually at larger grocery stores but sometimes can be hidden, often disguised as Cajun seasoning. How To Prepare The Salmon For Grilling
If buying a whole filet:
- Remove the belly area that has bones. This is typically the area where silver skin can be seen. We slice along the top of it to keep a nice uniform shape.
- Remove the pin bones if it has not already been done with tweezers.
- Slice the salmon into four equal filets around 6 8 ounces each depending on the size of the salmon. Pat the salmon dry with a paper towel and prepare to season.
Chefs Tip on Bone-In Salmon: Ask your fish monger or butcher counter to remove pin bones. Pin bones are not fun to pick through. Any good monger or butcher will do this for you.
If you use the tail end, leave that filet slightly larger to get the same weight and note that it will cook faster than the center cut. There is no need to marinade or brine the salmon.
Is Frozen Salmon Healthy
Freezing salmon does not change the nutrient content. Although many people believe that fresh salmon is better for you, there is no scientific evidence that freezing fish changes its nutritional status and some argue that frozen tastes even fresher, especially when frozen at the peak of freshness.
Types Of Salmon To Choose From
- Wild or farmed? You can choose wild or farmed, its up to you. Farm-raised salmon tends to be milder in flavor and more fatty/buttery in texture, while on the other hand wild salmon can be a little more spendy, but is leaner, pinker, and higher in minerals such as zinc and iron. Both are delicious!
- Skin on or off? Choose a salmon with the skin still on it. This will help keep the salmon extra flavorful, plus its easier to grill.
- Different varieties of salmon. The most common types of salmon youll find at the grocery store are King/Chinook, which is large with a high fat content, Sockeye, which is more red/orange in color, Coho/Silver salmon, which has bright red flesh, and Atlantic Salmon, which is always farmed.

What Temp To Cook Salmon

Making grilled salmon in foil is by far the easiest method for grilling fish out there. There are a few tradeoffs with Classic Grilled Salmon, where you grill the fish right on the grates. Heres what to expect:
- Classic grilled salmon comes out with a crispy top and charred flavor. If you love a crispy top to your salmon, youll want to use this method instead. Cook it right on the grill grates, then flip and finish cooking.
- Grilled salmon in foil comes out perfectly moist. The top does not crisp up here, and you wont get as much charred grill flavor because the foil acts as a barrier. But this method is extremely easy and the fish comes out incredibly tender and delicious!
The difference is almost like the difference between a pan seared salmon and a poached salmon. Cooking in foil makes things moist instead of crispy, but its incredibly easy. How Long Does It Take To Grill Frozen Fish
Sometimes, taking time to thaw the fish in advance isnt practical, so luckily you can cook fish directly from frozen in as little as 10 to 12 minutes. Here Are Some Of Our Favorite Techniques For Grilling Salmon
Kabobs: Cut your salmon into one to one and a half inch cubes and marinate for 30 minutes to an hour. Thread marinated salmon and veggies onto skewers and arrange salmon kabobs on hot grill grates. Close the lid and cook for three to four minutes per side until theyre opaque, flaky and tender.
Cedar Plank: Cedar planks insulate delicate fish from the direct heat of the grill, allowing it to steam gently in the heat of the grill, staying incredibly tender and moist. It picks up smoky flavors from the grill and woodsy flavors from the cedar, along with the liquid you soak the planks in.
Grilling Basket: Keep your salmon from falling through the cracks with a non-stick grilling basket that has a locking lid. Place salmon in the basket and set the basket on top of the grates. When its time to flip, you can flip the grilling basket with worrying about your fish falling apart.
Foil: Grilling salmon in foil helps to protect your salmon from the intense flames of the grill while still providing that great chargrilled flavor you want. Place the fish in the center of a sheet of foil and add seasoning. Fold the foil over the top and mold the foil into a sealed packet. Set it on the grill grates and cook over indirect heat for 10-12 minutes. After letting it rest for five minutes, open carefully to avoid hot steam as it escapes the packet.
When Is Grilled Salmon Done
A common recommendation for fish is that its done when it flakes easily with a fork, but its also easy to overcook it this way. For best results, use a meat thermometer to ensure perfectly cooked salmon and check the internal temperature every couple of minutes after you flip it:
- Medium rare 125 degrees F
- Medium 130 degrees F
- Medium well 140 degrees F
Let the salmon rest for 3-5 minutes before serving, as the internal temperature will rise 3-5 more degrees while resting.
If you dont have a meat thermometer, though, you can use my time estimates above and flake the edge of the fish with a fork to test for doneness.
