How to Grill Shrimp

Growing up in North Carolina, it was impossible not to love shrimp. We ate it year-round in everything from classic shrimp cocktail to shrimp and grits. But my favorite way of preparing shrimp wasand still isgrilling it. Grilling is an ideal way to cook shrimp because shrimp needs quick high heat to keep it juicy and flavorful. The only danger with this fast and easy method is overcooking. But if you stick to my advice to grill shrimp in the shell and to monitor it closely, youll discover how succulent grilled shrimp can be.

Grilling shrimp in the shell keeps all those delicious juices from escaping, guaranteeing much tastier, moister meat. In fact, Im such a fan of this method that I grill most of my shrimp this way, even if Im using them in another dish, like the Grilled Shrimp Margarita. Its easy to add flavor to shell-on shrimp toss them in olive oil and spice or salt rubs before grilling and then serve them with a dipping sauce or two. If youre worried that your guests might not want to fuss with shells, dont be: Peeling shrimp is a great icebreaker.

How Long Do You Grill Shrimp On Skewers

Shrimp cook very quickly, so its imperative to watch your shrimp to make sure they dont overcook. Shrimp typically take about 2-3 minutes per side on the grill. Youll be able to tell when the shrimp are done because theyll turn pink and opaque.

You can use an outdoor grill, grill pan, or broiler to make these shrimp skewers. I typically use my outdoor grill, but when the weather isnt nice or I dont feel like firing up the grill, I cook the shrimp on the stove top in my favorite grill pan.

I use the largest shrimp I can find for this recipe. Shrimp are labeled based on their size count, or the number of shrimp you get per pound. These shrimp are the jumbo size shrimp, which are 16-20 per pound. You can go smaller if need be and the recipe will still be delicious.

Whenever I post shrimp recipes, I always get asked if the shrimp tails should be left on or removed. I typically keep the tails on when Im looking for a nicer presentation. Its really a matter of personal preference whether you leave the tails on or remove them before grilling.

I typically serve my grilled shrimp skewers over rice with a colorful veggie or salad on the side for a complete meal that my whole family devours!

What Temperature To Grill Shrimp Skewers

Temperature is an essential factor while grilling shrimp. Preheat the grill to a moderate flame that is 450 degrees Fahrenheit. The most accurate warmth to grill is an excellent shrimp. Arrange the prawns directly on a barbecue and cook for 1 to 2 minutes on each side, or until hot pink and heated well.

How To Cook It

Very speedy! Specifically for this recipe, there is:

  • no marinating needed. In fact, you should NOT season ahead of time because it will draw moisture out of the shrimp

  • 6 minutes total cook time 2 minutes for the butter, 4 minutes for the shrimp on the BBQ

The only thing to watch out for is to ensure you do not overcook the shrimp! Overcooked shrimp is tough and rubbery if you throw it at a wall, itll bounce right back and hit you in the face.

Stove? Oven?

100% yes for the stove. In fact, I had to rephotograph it today because I wasnt happy with the photos but its raining so I cooked it inside. Same crust, same flavour!

But the oven is a no-go zone Im afraid just cant get the same crust because of the short cook time.

You can also freeze fully cooked shrimp for longer storage. Simply let the shrimp cool, then pat them dry to prevent ice crystals from forming. To freeze the shrimp separately, arrange them in a single layer on a baking sheet and place them in the freeser for 20 minutes to firm up. Then transfer the shrimp to an airtight container or bag and freeze for up to three months.

When youre ready to eat your frozen shrimp, place them in the fridge overnight to thaw. You can reheat them on the stove, in the oven or in the microwave. Just be sure to serve the thawed shrimp within a day of thawing and never refreeze previously frozen shrimp .

Learn how to grill shrimp perfectly so you can have juicy skewers whenever youre cooking outdoors. Its really fast and easy.

Shrimp are one of my favorite things to eat, especially in the warm months. Theyre light and juicy, but are also an awesome source of protein. Grilling shrimp is one of the best ways to prepare them because the high heat cooks them quickly but leaves them tender on the inside. The smoky flavor the char marks leave is really tasty too.

I try to keep frozen shrimp in my freezer at all times for when I need a fast dinner. Heres how I thaw my shrimp when I need them. I like frozen shrimp because they are frozen quickly after theyre caught, which makes them really fresh when defrosted.

As much as I love grilled chicken, grilling shrimp is much faster. The tricky part about grilling shrimp is that theyre small, so they have a tendency to fall through the grates if you dont grill them on a skewer. Just make sure to soak wood skewers in water for 30 minutes prior to putting them on the grill so they dont burn.

You also want to make sure you pat your shrimp completely dry before you grill them. This prevents them from sticking to the grill. After you pat them dry, drizzle on a little bit of olive oil, and sprinkle with salt, and pepper.

When I serve plain, grilled shrimp, I like to serve them with a squeeze of lemon juice. It adds the perfect little extra flavor to the shrimp.

  • Preheat the grill to medium heat.
  • Thread the shrimp on the skewers and grill 2 to 3 minutes each side. Remove from skewers and place in a serving bowl.

    Selecting The Best Shrimp

At the store, you will find a variety of shrimp ranging in size from extra small to extra colossal. Large and jumbo shrimp are the most common and economical and a great size for the grill.

When determining how much shrimp you’ll need, keep the count per pound in mind. You will get around 30 large shrimp per pound and about 20 jumbo shrimp per pound. If shrimp is your main dish, plan on 1/3- to 1/2-pound per person. If you choose to leave the shells on, make it 3/4-pound per person.

Raw shrimp is the best choice for the grill, though precooked shrimp will work. Due to safety and flavor concerns, do not refreeze shrimp that have been thawed out. Most likely, the shrimp on display in the grocer’s case was previously frozen. Unless you have live shrimp available, you’re better off with individually quick frozen shrimp.
